17 Easy DIY Pet Outfits For National Dress Up your Pet Day!

Nothing is cuter than a pup in clothes or a costume! January 14th is the day to do it; it’s National Dress Up Your Pet Day! Whether your dog has “main character energy” or she is officially entering her “fashion era,” there is nothing more fun than raiding your scrap bin to create a custom look that shows off her unique personality.

These projects are all about making memories with your pets. You don’t need a complicated pattern to make your best friend the talk of the neighborhood—just a little fabric and a lot of love. Let’s get stitching and get those cameras ready!

Bow Tie Pet Bandana

A pet bandana is the perfect sewing project because it’s so fast and easy. You can start and finish in about an hour, I promise! I LOVE to dress up our dogs with bandanas. They look adorable no matter how much the bandana turns around. If the V-shape is in the front or the back (or the side), it doesn’t matter! It’s cute every way.

I’m sure a bandana would also look cute on a pet cat, pig, chicken, llama, ferret, goat, or human!

Sew A Dog Dress

This video tutorial will show you how to really dress up your pet. You can easily make a custom bodice pattern for your dog; no matter the size! You will learn how and where to measure, and then you can either add a skirt or use that bodice to hold things like tulle or tissue paper for any of your unique costume ideas.

No Sew Homemade Dog Costumes

Dress up your pet with craft foam! There are several costume templates made from craft foam available at Craft Your Happiness. These costumes are very light weight and easy to make. If you fur baby doesn’t love to be adorned, perhaps this is a good place to start.

Teddy Bear Costume Hack

The face belongs to the dog, the rest is a plush! This no sew costume is a video tutorial on TikTok. It’s so much fun to watch even if you don’t want to use it for yourself. The hack is that you will use an existing stuffed bear and alter it so you put your dog’s face and front legs into the bear’s body. Here’s the link to the video.

Chia Pet DIY

This costume photo is for inspiration. You can combine some of the other patterns in this post to dress up your pet like a ch-ch-ch-chia! Measure your fur baby and make a pattern, then hot glue greens all over the place! You can even glue brown felt onto the shirt to make a faux collar and pant legs.

Note: The dress pattern further up is a great starting point for this costume. It’s super basic and leaves room for any kind of clever additions.

I love how the ears on the DIY dog costume match the dog’s fur color! You could buy one, but making your own is really sew much better. Add an Ewok or two to your national calendar.
