Hardware Tip
When you’re buying your hardware, make sure the internal width of the D-ring, slider, and clip all match the width of your strap (usually 1″ or 1.5″). Sewing Hack: The “Perfect Pivot” for Bag Corners

Choosing The Right Needle
When you start layering your exterior fabric, interfacing, and lining, your standard universal needle might struggle to pierce through all that bulk. To get those beautiful, shop-quality stitches on a crossbody bag, I highly recommend switching to a 90/14 or 100/16 Denim (Jeans) needle. These needles are designed with a reinforced shaft and a very sharp point, which helps them punch through thick canvas or denim without “deflecting” (bending).
If you are doing a lot of visible topstitching around the zipper or the top edge of the bag, a Topstitching needle is another fantastic choice. It has a larger eye that accommodates thicker decorative threads, preventing fraying and giving you that crisp, professional finish you’d see on a ready-to-wear bag.
Mod Satchel

To make this a true sling/crossbody bag you will need to make the lining strips longer than 22″, but I love this bag sew much and I think you will too! When you open the bag, the handle gets shorter which helps keep your things secure. It’s an excellent hands-free, tech-ready bag.

Your Guide to Crossbody Hardware

Selecting the right “jewelry” for your bag is the secret to a polished, ready-to-wear finish. If you’ve ever felt overwhelmed by the bins at the craft store, here is the quick breakdown of the three essential hardware pieces you’ll need for most free crossbody bag patterns.
1. D-Rings: The Anchors
Think of D-rings as the foundation. These “D” shaped metal loops are typically sewn into a small fabric tab on the sides of your bag. They provide a sturdy, secure place for your strap to attach.
2. Lobster Claws (Swivel Hooks): The Connectors
These are the clips that live on the ends of your straps. They “clasp” onto the D-rings. The “swivel” variety allows your strap to spin freely so it never gets twisted or tangled while you’re wearing it. It’s a small detail that makes a huge difference in comfort!
3. Sliders: The Adjusters
If you want a strap that can convert from a shoulder bag to a long crossbody, you need a slider. This rectangular piece allows you to change the length of the fabric strap on the fly. It’s the key to making a bag that fits your body perfectly.
Budget Hack
While the bags in a thrift store are often in poor shape, the hardware is still usable. Consider buying the whole bag while getting a whole set of perfect hardware. It’s often less then new hardware at the craft store.
