Warm and Wonderful: 62 Free Throw Quilt Patterns

Every day is a good day to sew a perfect throw quilt! These quilts range in size from approximately 40″ x 60″ all the way to 60″ x 80″ (with some just a little bigger than that). If you haven’t ever sewn a throw before you should give it a try. I love to see my quilts in use, and the throws get lots of love throughout the day.

Modern Log Cabin Throw Quilt

Sew a log cabin quilt with a modern vibe with my free quilt pattern! This large throw quilt uses 9 large traditional log cabin blocks with lots of negative space to really make the log cabins shine. I started off with a big one at 70″ x 84″ so you could envision the possibilities.

Zig Zag Sparkle

This gorgeous throw quilt pattern is one of my Sparkle Quilts. With detailed instructions and pictures, this pattern is easy enough for a beginner. I designed this to eliminate the Y-seams, so fear not and enjoy sewing this quilt. It finishes at approximately 66” x 72”. 

Diamond in a Square

If you have three 1-yard pieces of fabric in your stash and are feeling creative, you can make a quilt. This fun quilt uses the Diamond in a Square quilt block to make a 50” x 58” throw quilt pattern with 8” quilt blocks.

Five Patch Star

Use half square triangles (HST’s) and simple squares to sew a gorgeous throw quilt! My 5 Patch Star Quilt Pattern is perfect for using up scraps or just a few fat quarters, put together with a white or cream background fabric.

No Bake Jolly Bar

Jolly Bars are 5″ x 10″ precut rectangles. This shortcut quilt pattern by Fat Quarter Shop uses them in a beautiful zig zag pattern to make this 63.5″ x 81.5″ throw quilt.

Pineapple Fruit

Have you ever wanted to sew a pineapple fruit quilt? Here’s your chance… This free pineapple quilt block and large throw quilt pattern is as easy as sewing half square triangles! It’s a great way to use up fabric scraps.

Blueberry Pie

This free throw quilt pattern is sewn together using the fast and easy log cabin method. Using beautiful blue fabric made it look like blueberry pie. Of course you could make them into lemon, raspberry, or chocolate pies just as easily, lol. It finishes at 52″ x 64″.

Woven Hearts

Who is Cupid without hearts? This free woven heart quilt block and throw quilt pattern is suitable for a beginner quilter. It would look lovely draped across your couch or make a treasured gift for someone you love. The finished quilt is approximately 57” x 74.”

Candy Corn Therapy

Candy Corn Therapy is a strip quilt, meaning it is sewn together by cutting and sewing strips together first (or using pre-cut strips). This free throw quilt pattern includes instructions for the 60’’ quilt, and a smaller version using a Jelly Roll bundle.

Huddle Medallion

Sew a fast and easy throw quilt using fat quarters! This free quilt pattern is great for beginners. This quilt finishes at 54″ square.

Fat Quarter Fizz

Fat Quarter Shop has done it again! This pattern is super easy and perfect for beginners or experienced quilters who want to make a hip, modern throw quilt – fast! And there’s even a video.

Golden Pineapple

Sew a beautiful throw quilt using pineapple quilt blocks with a twist! The Golden Pineapple Quilt Pattern has big 20” quilt blocks so it’s fast to sew. It finishes at 71″.

Ninja Stars

This Ninja Star quilt is perfect for that hard-to-sew-for person on your list. This free pattern comes with a huge Full or Twin XL size (for someone going off to college) and a fun throw size that’s perfect for watching TV on cool nights.

Scrappy Log Cabins

The Log Cabin is a simple quilt block that can be sewn in any size and arranged in so many ways that there are literally endless possibilities. This free quilt pattern can be used to sew any size quilt you choose depending on the size of your log cabin blocks.

Cheshire Cats

I’m sure you know someone who loves cats, if you don’t love them yourself that is. Here is a sweet throw pattern that will make a puurrrfect addition to any home. It finishes at 74″ x 86″ for a large, snuggly (nearly twin size) throw quilt.

Giant Star

The Giant Star throw is a perfect size for a picnic. It comes together quickly because of the large HST pieces used to construct the blocks. I feel like picnics are part of the American Dream so how appropriate for this one to be patriotic!

Bear’s Paw

Let me show you how to make Bear’s Paw Quilt Blocks and Art Square Blocks and sew them into a cozy fall quilt. This free throw quilt pattern finishes at 52″.

Kisses

Sew a classic signature quilt with my free fat quarter friendly quilt pattern! This throw sized signature cross quilt pattern is fast and easy to make. It’s the perfect quilt project for a beginner or anyone who wants a fun weekend quilting project. It finishes at 56″ x 68″.

Chandelier

Sew a beautiful Chandelier Quilt Pattern with just 3 yards of fabric! This free quilt pattern makes a throw quilt that is approximately 48” x 59” with 8” Chandelier quilt blocks.

Splendor

Splendor is a 3 yard small throw quilt pattern that features Four Crown Quilt Blocks and Flower Patch Quilt Blocks. It finishes at 40″ x 52″ with a beautiful design of star bursts.

Twin Star

Twin Star is a 47” x 59” free throw quilt pattern that showcases Twin Star Quilt blocks mixed with uneven Nine Patch blocks to really make the Twin Stars shine! This quilt is great for beginners. 

Signature Cross

Sew a classic signature quilt with my free fat quarter friendly quilt pattern! This throw sized signature cross quilt pattern is fast and easy to make. The 60” x 60” throw size can easily be quilted on a regular sewing machine, and you can easily resize it to make it bigger or smaller if you need a different size.

Charm Poppy

Sew a an adorable throw size quilt (or large baby quilt) using a charm bundle of your favorite cotton quilting fabrics! The Charm Poppy finished quilt size is approximately 54’’ x 50’’.

Stretched Stars

Stretched Stars throw quilt finishes at 46″ x 54″. Sewing HST to the corners of a background gives an interesting, starry, stretched out look.

Wilderness

Even though I live in Florida, I’m a sucker for the mountains. This throw quilt pattern is a landscape instead of a repeating pattern that I just love. It finishes at 60″ x 64″ and would be at home in a cabin, or a beach house dreaming of a cabin.

Rectangle Log Cabin

Sew another Log Cabin throw quilt with your scraps. I love how Kristy placed the prints on this quilt. They look a bit like lace! This quilt pattern finishes at 60″ x 88″ for a generous throw.

Dutchman’s Puzzle

If you have three 1-yard pieces of fabric in your stash and are feeling creative, you can make a quilt. This darling quilt uses the Dutchman puzzle quilt block to make a 47” x 59” throw quilt pattern with 12” quilt blocks.

The Chunky Star

Sew a bold star quilt featuring your favorite fabric! The Chunky Star Quilt Pattern requires just 3 different 1-yard pieces of fabric. This free quilt pattern makes a beautiful lap quilt, throw quilt, or wall hanging that is 51” x 51”. 

Sew Happy Together

Sew an adorable throw quilt with three-dimensional prairie points in the border! This free quilt pattern teaches how to make prairie points and sew easy 9-patch blocks and snowball blocks. The finished quilt is 40” x 46”.

Enchanted

Sew a beautiful Moroccan inspired quilt using everyone’s favorite pre-cut cotton fabrics… fat quarters! This free throw quilt pattern finishes at 68″ square.

Grandma’s Lattice

Sew up a beautiful lattice quilt with patchwork squares – just like grandma would make! This free pattern is for a generous 77’’ x 77’’ size throw quilt.

Liberty Rainbow

Sew a beautiful quilt in all the colors of the rainbow! Here’s a free quilt pattern for a simple 54″ x 63″ bargello style quilt that you can customize in a million different ways. Sewn up in gorgeous rainbow floral fabrics from Liberty, I don’t think anything could be lovelier.

When Harry Met Sally

I love the contrast between dark and floral prints in this beautiful arrangement of the Log Cabin quilting block. Sew this throw quilt by going to ModAlissa and reading about her pattern.

Ma Maison

This quilt pattern is great for beginners, and there are very few seams that need to be matched. This throw quilt finishes at 48″ x 56″.

Starry Log Cabins

This is a beautiful mix of log cabin and stars. It’s great for using a Jelly Roll bundle. This quilt pattern finishes at 41″ x 58″.

After the Storm

This fat quarter friendly quilt pattern is easier than it looks. The shots of color peeking through the monochromatic ‘storm clouds’ are a stunning sight on this generous 60″ x 72″ quilt.

Scrappy Log Cabin

Here’s another log cabin design for you; I must really love those! This vintage-inspired large throw quilt finishes at 80″ square. The red centers are one of the traditional elements in Scrappy Log Cabin.

Fat Quarter Flowers

Fat Quarter Flowers is another shortcut quilt pattern from Fat Quarter Shop. I love a good shortcut! This free quilt pattern is a good one for beginners also because there are very few seams to line up. It’s finished at 52.5″ x 65.5″.

Jelly Roll Strip

Get a Jelly Roll bundle and sew this beautiful strip quilt. It’s finished at 50″ x 60″ for a nice size throw.

Rails and Ribbons

This quilt was sewn with Michael Miller’s Land that I Love collection. It’s a Jelly Roll design with a fabulous patriotic feel (hello Texas!). Check out the free pattern from The Sewing Loft.

Test Tubes

Heidi Staples said, “The Test Tubes Quilt is one of the most beginner friendly quilt patterns I’ve ever designed. These blocks come together like lightning, and the result is both modern and colorful.” The quilt finishes at 45″ x 69″ for a nice long throw.

Stars and Panels

Do you have square fabric panels that you love but you don’t know what to make with them? Here’s the perfect quilt pattern for that! This easy quilt pattern will make your square panels look beautiful when you turn them into a gorgeous sawtooth star quilt.

Superstar

This Super Star Quilt Pattern will prove that you are a superstar quilter because the super sized stars make it super fast! Learn how to make this quilt today with my free quilt pattern. The finished size of this quilt is a generous 60’’ x 80’’. 

Aunt Dinah

Aunt Dinah is a three yard, 54” x 54” throw quilt pattern that showcases Aunt Dinah quilt blocks mixed with some Irish Chain quilt blocks to really make Aunt Dinah sparkle! Here is the free quilt pattern.

Spools and Stars

This fun quilt uses a spool quilt block to make a 47” x 57” throw quilt pattern with 10” quilt blocks. This spool quilt pattern is unique because it may appear to have two different blocks that you have to learn… but you only have to learn and sew a single block. When you sew the blocks together, the pretty sawtooth stars will appear!

Ohio Stars and Ladders

This Stars and Ladders Pattern is a 46” x 58” lap quilt or throw quilt pattern with 12” quilt blocks. Because of the size, throw quilts like this one are easy to quilt on a domestic sewing machine.

Big Star

Learn how to sew a big star quilt using half square triangles! This fast and easy (and free) throw quilt pattern uses my shortcut method for sewing two half square triangles (HST’s) at one time. And guess what – this free basic quilt pattern makes a beautiful holiday quilt too!

Friendship Star

Sew an easy Friendship Star Quilt using my free quilt pattern! Let me show you how to make half square triangle units two at a time. Then you’ll sew them together with some squares and viola… A Friendship Star block. Put the blocks together with some easy sashing and you’ll have this 72” x 72” throw quilt in no time at all.

Jelly Roll Relish

This is a fun beginner friendly quilt. Find a Jelly Roll pre-cut fabric bundle that you love, and start piecing right away. With this pattern you can make a throw or twin size quilt.

Fat Quarter Whirlwind

Sew a fast and easy quilt with my free Fat Quarter Whirlwind Quilt Pattern. This pattern is perfect for beginners or anyone who needs to sew a quilt quickly because the blocks are simple and repetitive. I’m providing a free template for the whirlwind blades too.

Jelly Roll Railway

This 61.5″ x 78.5″ throw quilt is fun and easy to make. If you are using Jelly Roll bundles you can start sewing immediately without having to cut fabric first. Of course, you can also use your stash or scraps.

Fat Quarter Fancy

One of the things I love about fat quarter bundles is digging through and finding that golden gem of a print. This free quilt pattern is the kind of quilt I like to sew with the other prints that are beautiful, but not what I want to feature. This generous 80″ quilt is a burst of color; enjoy it!

Carpenter Star

Sew a beautiful Carpenter’s Star Quilt Pattern! The Carpenter’s Star is a traditional quilt design that uses HSTs. This simple and free quilt pattern is a medallion quilt that has the Carpenter’s Star at the center and a beautiful border too.

Stars and Irish Chain

ew an easy Variable Star Quilt using fat quarters with this free quilt pattern! The finished quilt is a 76” x 76” throw size quilt.

Little Trees

Here’s an easy pine tree quilt pattern that is darling for the holidays or any time of the year! You can also use your favorite tree block (there’s another option in the tutorial) for a different look. Finished at 53″ x 51″, this smaller throw is cozy and beautiful.

Carpenter’s Stars

Sew a beautiful Carpenter’s Star Quilt Pattern with just 3 yards of fabric! This free quilt pattern with HSTs might become your all-time favorite. This particular quilt finishes at 41” x 57”, which is a smallish throw-size quilt. You’ll have enough fabric to finish the quilt top, including 6 large blocks and 2 borders. More fabric is required for the binding and quilt back.

Ohio Stars

Sew an easy Ohio Star Quilt using my free quilt pattern! This Ohio Star Quilt Pattern uses 7 fat quarters (pre-cut 18” x 21” pieces of fabric) and 4 1/2 yards of background fabric to make a 71” x 86” throw quilt.

Merry Stars

Sew a beautiful holiday themed star-in-a-star quilt! This fast and easy throw quilt will make your home merrier and cozier. It finishes at 67″ square. Of course, you can use all kinds of prints for different holidays, or just for fun.

Nine Patch Irish Chain

Let me show you a shortcut method for making a bunch of little nine-patch quilt blocks. Then you’ll sew them together with some squares and viola… the 9 Patch Chain block. Put 16 blocks together with some easy sashing and one border. You’ll have this 64” x 64” Irish chain throw quilt.

Easy Spools

This fast and easy throw quilt pattern is perfect for beginner quilters. Of all quilt block designs, I think the darling spool block is my favorite. It’s just so fitting for quilters! Finished quilt size: 71” x 71”.

Summer Snowflake

Sew a beautiful throw quilt with half square triangles! My Summer Snowflake free HST quilt pattern comes with a layout mat to make it super easy to keep track of your half square triangles.

Easy Panel with Irish Chain

I designed an Irish chain quilt that perfectly complimented the panel. Each panel image is framed to set it apart. This also gives you some flexibility in case your panel images are not the same size as these. The finished size of this throw quilt is 62’’ wide by 74’’ tall.

Bonus: Pop Rox Quilt Block

Here is the tutorial and information for this fantastic quilt block. There’s a link in the post to see the finished product; it’s a bonus because there isn’t a specific pattern for the whole quilt, but if you’re comfortable making your own design with sashing then I think this block makes a super fun throw.
