Learn how to quilt a flower motif on all your quilts! This is the last video in my Color By Number Quiltalong video series where I show you how to quilt an easy flower motif. You might be able to quilt this flower design using a ruler that you already have, so I’ll show you how to quilt it using 2 different quilting rulers from my collection. I’ll also show you how to easily quilt this design without a quilting ruler at all, so don’t worry if you haven’t tried quilting with rulers yet.

This is week 16 in our Color By Number Quiltalong where we are free motion quilting a new designs each week on our Color By Number Quilt (free quilt pattern)! Find all of the CBN Quiltalong videos here.

First I’ll show you how to use the Spin-e-fex Number 4 ruler (3 1/2’’ size) from Sew Steady to quilt a simple flower with 8 petals. This ruler is part of Template Set Number 1 from Sew Steady. You can see from the photo above that I applied NexCare clear first aid tape to my template first to prevent slipping.

And this is what your flower motif will look like using that template! I love the retro vibe that it has.

Next, I show you how to sew a very similar flower motif using the Taj ruler from Angela Walters. This is a very versatile ruler that I’ve used in LOTS of different ways.

Using the Taj ruler in this manner, your flower will have slightly pointed petals. As you can see, the motif turned out almost the same size as our previous flower and is perfect for our 4 1/2’’ blocks.

Finally, I’ll show you how to quilt almost the same flower without using any quilting ruler – just by thinking about balloons! If you think that sounds funny, make sure you watch the video to see why.

In this video, I used:
