How to Sew Designer Zipper Bags – Video Course Lesson 3 – Finale!

It’s finally time for Lesson 3 of our Designer Zipper Bags Video Course!

How to Sew Designer Zipper Bags is a free video course that I have been working on to share the entire zipper bag making process in a way that you can’t go wrong.

Lesson 3, part 1 (above) is all about cutting corners from the bottom of your bag so you get that cute flat bottom.

This is a really quick video, but I felt like the step was important enough to stand on its own.

Lesson 3, part 2 is where I quickly show you how to sew the side seams.

Be sure to place the bag with exterior sides facing, and don’t worry about sewing the corners yet!

Lesson 3, part 3 is where we bind the interior seams for a professional finish.

Before you get started with video 3.3, you’ll want to prepare some 1 1/4’’ wide binding strips. They do not have to be cut on the bias.

I cut up my scraps from the exterior to make 5-6 strips, and then grabbed from my pile as I worked. If you want to be more exact, you will need:

• 1 strip 1 1/4’’ x 8’’ for binding the bottom seam

• 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 5 1/2’’ for binding the side seams

• 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 4’’ for binding the bottom corners (in Lesson 3.5)

• 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 3’’ for binding the top corners (in Lesson 3.5)

Lesson 3, part 4 is my favorite of all! Here is where we box the bottom corners plus flatten the top zipper so it looks gorgeous!

Nesting your bound seams at the bottom corners really helps for smooth sewing.

If your sewing machine struggles through all these layers, you may want to switch to a heavier needle.

I use a size 90/14 needle throughout this project, but don’t hesitate to use a 100/16 needle if your smaller needle seems like it will break.

Lesson 3, part 5 is just more binding – but be sure to watch so you see how I tuck the ends in for a neat finish.

If you aren’t using wonder clips yet, I think you’ll really want some, they are a lifesaver!
