How to Sew Designer Zipper Bags – Video Course Lesson 3 – Finale!

Designer Zipper Bags Lesson 3.jpg

It’s finally time for Lesson 3 of our Designer Zipper Bags Video Course!

How to Sew Designer Zipper Bags is a free video course that I have been working on to share the entire zipper bag making process in a way that you can’t go wrong.

Lesson 1 can be found here.

Lesson 2 can be found here.

This blog post contains everything you need for Lesson 3 – Finishing Your Zipper Bag!

If for some reason, the videos in this post won’t play for you, you can watch the entire course in this YouTube playlist.

Lesson 3, part 1 (above) is all about cutting corners from the bottom of your bag so you get that cute flat bottom.

This is a really quick video, but I felt like the step was important enough to stand on its own.

Lesson 3, part 2 is where I quickly show you how to sew the side seams.

Lesson 2.2.jpg

Be sure to place the bag with exterior sides facing, and don’t worry about sewing the corners yet!

Lesson 3, part 3 is where we bind the interior seams for a professional finish.

Lesson 3.3.jpg

Before you get started with video 3.3, you’ll want to prepare some 1 1/4’’ wide binding strips. They do not have to be cut on the bias.

I cut up my scraps from the exterior to make 5-6 strips, and then grabbed from my pile as I worked. If you want to be more exact, you will need:

  • 1 strip 1 1/4’’ x 8’’ for binding the bottom seam

  • 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 5 1/2’’ for binding the side seams

  • 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 4’’ for binding the bottom corners (in Lesson 3.5)

  • 2 strips 1 1/4’’ x 3’’ for binding the top corners (in Lesson 3.5)

Lesson 3, part 4 is my favorite of all! Here is where we box the bottom corners plus flatten the top zipper so it looks gorgeous!

Lesson 3.4a.jpg

Nesting your bound seams at the bottom corners really helps for smooth sewing.

If your sewing machine struggles through all these layers, you may want to switch to a heavier needle.

I use a size 90/14 needle throughout this project, but don’t hesitate to use a 100/16 needle if your smaller needle seems like it will break.

Lesson 3, part 5 is just more binding – but be sure to watch so you see how I tuck the ends in for a neat finish.

Lesson 3.5a.jpg

If you aren’t using wonder clips yet, I think you’ll really want some, they are a lifesaver!

I think you knew that I was sewing along with the class, right?

Well, here’s the big reveal where I turn my Tula Pink tiger bag right side out!

I’m also sharing my policy for selling things made from my patterns and tutorials. Make sure you watch if this is of interest to you.

Thank you for the pouch video. Super cute. I would have liked to have seen the inside of the pouch when you were finished. I guess I will have to make one to find out. lol I will let the grandkids pick out their fabric choices out of my inventory, (a closet full).

  6. Wonderful video class and free too! You are wonderful and so giving to share with us. I plan to make one in the next few days because yours turned out so well! Thank you, too, for telling us the needle size.

  7. This was an excellent tutorial series! Thanks so much for sharing it!!

  8. Enjoyed the video course Caroline! I want to tell others that you are so correct about using the bag zipper versus a regular one. I did not have a bag zip on hand but wanted to work along with you. Tried a regular zipper and realized the extra width sure makes a difference when top stitching the band to encase the seam allowance. For a first attempt it worked out OK but could have been better. Posted a photo on the Show Off Saturday part of your website. Thanks for all your hard work doing the videos. Splitting up the daily tutorial into segments worked well for me.

Thank you for the video course! You are always so generous to share! I have always disliked the way the zipper looks at the ends and this makes them look AWESOME! You are BRILLIANT for figuring this out! Thanks for sharing! I see these pouches in my future!!!

Love this bag! Have made several and the videos are soooo helpful! Wondering if I can enlarge them by just adding an inch or 2 to pattern pieces??
