My inspiration when designing this quilt was the gorgeous peony blossoms on Kaffe Fasset Collective’s Brocade Peony fabric. I had leftover 108” quilt backing fabric in this print, but there are other colorways available too in regular 44” wide yardage. If you search Google or Amazon for ‘Peony Brocade Fabric‘, you’ll see the options.
This pattern will also work with any other fabric that you want to fussy cut and highlight. You could place flowers, animals, faces, dinosaurs, or even embroidered designs in the center of the elongated stars. Or why not use leftover layer cake squares? The fussy cut squares are 6 1/2” before sewing.

If you want to try fussy cutting on a smaller, faster, and easier quilt, take a look at my Picnic Square 3 Yard Quilt. It would also look great with Kaffe’s peonies.

My version only requires 2 print fabrics plus a background fabric. This is a quilt design that features pieced blocks in the sashing and large unpieced background fabric blocks. There are so many ways that you could enjoy custom quilting this quilt, if that’s what you love.
If you love to use your AccuQuilt fabric cutter like I do, I’ll share some optional cutting die numbers to make this pattern Accuquilt-friendly. Using an Accuquilt is optional, but I love how easy it makes sewing tricky blocks! See all my Accuquilt-friendly quilts. Look under the cutting dimensions below for a list of fabric-cutting dies you may use instead. Please note that using AccuQuilt dies may require extra fabric.

You will need:
- Enough main fabric to fussy cut:*
- 13 full motifs (6 1/2” squares)
- 8 triangle shaped motifs (approximately 7” half square triangle shaped)
- 4 smaller triangle shaped motifs (approximately 4” half square triangle shaped)
- 2 1/4 yards of coordinating fabric for the star points
- 4 1/2 yards of background fabric
- 2 1/2 yards of 108” wide quilt backing fabric (or enough fabric to piece together an 88” x 88” quilt back)
- a piece of quilt batting at least 88” x 88”
- 3/4 yard of binding fabric (8 binding strips)
* Main fabric tips: It may be helpful when shopping to unroll the fabric from the bolt and count how many 6 1/2” square fussy-cutable motifs you can get from each yard. For reference, I needed about 3/4 yard of the 108” wide Brocade Peony fabric. That is equal to about 2 yards of regular 44” wide fabric.
You will also need:
- a rotary cutter, acrylic ruler, and mat
- sewing machine
- thread (I suggest thread matching the background fabric)
- ironing board and iron
- pencil or fabric marking pen
- the cutting templates that you can download below
Cutting Instructions
The sashing blocks in this quilt finish at 6” x 12”. The main blocks are plain background fabric and finish at 12” x 12”.
From your main fabric
Fussy cut:
- 13 squares 6 1/2” x 6 1/2” (keep in mind that these will be set on point – like a diamond)
- 8 triangles from the template ‘motif edge triangle’
- 4 triangles from the template ‘motif corner triangle’
From your coordinating fabric
1. Cut 20 strips 3 1/2” x WOF (width of fabric.

2. From 15 of the the strips, cut:
- 72 triangles using the template ‘Sashing Block Side Triangle A’ and
- 72 triangles using the template ‘Sashing Block Side Triangle B (reverse)’
Tips: Make sure that you cut all of these triangles with your print fabric right side up, OR place two strips of fabric right sides together and use one of the templates to cut out all of the triangles – half of the triangles will automatically be cut in reverse this way.
AccuQuilt Cutting Instructions: AccuQuilt die 55817 matches this template. It is found in the GO! Qube 12″ Companion Set-Angles. Be sure to cut 1/2 of the triangles in reverse.

3. From 5 of the strips, cut 32 triangles using the ‘Border Triangle’ template.
4. From the scraps leftover from your strips, cut 4 triangles using the ‘Border Edge Triangle’ template. Two of these triangles must be cut in reverse – turn the template over or cut from the wrong side of the fabric.
5. Cut 4 squares 3 1/2” x 3 1/2”.
From your background fabric

1. Cut 8 strips 6 1/2” x WOF. From these strips, cut 72 triangles using the ‘Sashing Block background triangle’ template.
AccuQuilt Cutting Instructions: AccuQuilt die 55757 matches this template. It is found in the GO! Qube 12″ Companion Set-Angles.

2. Cut 6 strips 3 1/2” x WOF. From these strips, cut 36 triangles using the ‘Border Triangle’ template.
3. Cut 12 squares 12 1/2” x 12 1/2”
4. Cut 3 squares 18 1/8” x 18 1/8”. Cut each of these squares in half diagonally twice to make 12 large setting triangles.
AccuQuilt Cutting Instructions: Use AccuQuilt 12” Setting Triangle Die 55554.
Make 36 Diamond Sashing Blocks
Use a 1/4” (or scant 1/4”) seam allowance throughout this quilt pattern.

1. Select one background fabric ‘sashing block triangle’ and two print fabric ‘sashing block side triangles’ (one reversed), as shown.

2. Sew the right side triangle to the background fabric triangle. Press the seams to one side or open, as desired. If you wish to nest the seams, press this seam toward the larger triangle.

3. Sew the left side triangle to the background fabric triangle. Press. If you wish to nest the seams, press this seam toward the smaller triangle.
Repeat to make 72 triangle in a square pieces.

4. Sew two triangle in a square pieces together along the bottom edge. Press the seams to one side or open, as desired.
Repeat to make 36 diamond sashing blocks.
Make the Borders

1. Sew a background fabric and a print fabric triangle together as shown. Press.

2. Continue sewing triangles together until you have a row with 9 background fabric triangles and 8 print fabric triangles. Sew border edge triangles at either end.
Repeat to make 4 border strips.

3. Sew 3 1/2” print fabric squares to the ends of two of the border strips.
Assemble the Little Divas Quilt Top

1. Use a quilt design wall, the clean floor, or a large bed to help you lay out the pieces. Arrange the 12 background fabric 12 1/2” squares together with the 36 sashing blocks, all of the fussy cut pieces, and the large setting triangles as shown.

2. Sew the blocks together in diagonal rows. Then sew the rows together.
Attach the Borders

1. Attach the border strips that do not have squares at the ends to the side edges of the quilt.

2. Attach the two remaining border strips to the top and bottom edges of the quilt.
Assemble the Quilt

1. Sew together or cut an 88’’ x 88’’ piece of backing fabric.
2. Make a quilt sandwich with the backing, batting, and top. Baste together with fusible batting, pins or basting spray.

3. Quilt as desired or send to your favorite long-arm quilter. There’s no shame in that!
4. Cut 8 binding strips and bind using your favorite method. This is my favorite quilt binding method.
