32 Free Fat Quarter Quilt Patterns You Will Love!
Fat quarters, sometimes known by quilters as ‘FQs’ are one of my favorites because you can easily find bundles that are beautifully coordinated and packaged like a present! I’m sure you buy some bundles without knowing exactly what you’ll make. Grab your favorites and check out these free patterns.
Are You a Fat Quarter (FQ) Novice?
A standard quarter-yard piece of fabric is 9 inches by 42-44 inches. A fat quarter piece of fabric measures approximately 18″ by 21″. This nearly square piece of fabric can be more user friendly for quilt designs and are great for quilters of all experience levels.
Fat quarter-friendly quilt patterns are designed specifically to use fat quarters. Of course, you can also use your fabric stash too. All of these free patterns include step-by-step photo instructions.
Fat Quarter Fancy Star Quilt
This big easy quilt pattern is a generous 88” x 88”, but you can easily make it smaller. My Fat Quarter Fancy Star Quilt Pattern is a great place to start, and perfect for any prints.
Baby Dresden Quilt
My Dresden Baby Quilt pattern is a 50″ square; perfect for a baby gift or as a lap quilt. I see gently whirling badminton birdies in this pattern! It’s a beautiful way to combine applique and piecing together with your most loved fabrics.
Grandma’s Lattice Quilt

Whirlwind Throw Quilt
The classic whirlwind quilt is easy to sew. And my free pattern includes a template plus step-by-step instructions. You can sew a 66โ x 55โ throw-size quilt with 10 fat quarters to make 30 blocks, or make any size you want โ each FQ you pick is enough for 3 blocks that finish at 11โ.
Signature Cross Throw Quilt
This Signature Cross Quilt Pattern is the perfect weekend quilt project. It’s fast and easy to sew, you can quilt it on a regular sewing machine, and you can easily resize it!

If you loved my first fat quarter fancy quilt pattern, you will adore this one! Fat Quarter Fancy II is another fabulous quilt pattern that uses a simple block and gives you limitless ways to arrange it. You only need three fabrics for this sewing pattern – two prints and a background fabric.
Sawtooth Stars and Irish Chains Quilt
My Fat Quarter Stars and Irish Chain quilt was inspired by the classic blue and white Amish quilts, but you could easily sew this one up in red and white for a Christmas quilt, or black and orange for Halloween. The sky is the limit with your creative possibilities!

This is a shortcut quilt pattern from Fat Quarter Shop. You can make the Fat Quarter Four Patch quilt in different sizes depending on how many fat quarters you have. I love a good shortcut!
Enchanted Throw Quilt
Sew a beautiful Moroccan-inspired quilt using 9 FQ plus 3 yards of background fabric. This pattern is for a stunning 68โโ x 68โโ square throw quilt.
Half Square Triangle Star Baby Quilt
Sew your next baby quilt using half square triangles (HST)! This fast and easy baby quilt pattern uses my shortcut method for sewing two HSTโs at one time. After you have sewn all of the HSTโs you need, youโll sew them together with a few extra background pieces and your new baby quilt top will be done.
