Scrap-Friendly Valentines: 14 Free Heart Quilt Block Patterns

| | |

Add a little extra love in your sewing room this February with these heart quilt block patterns. Each one is absolutely free, and a perfect way to use your precious fabric scraps you’ve been saving.

I love handmade projects that come from the ‘heart’ (and the scrap bin!), and individual blocks are so versatile you can make anything with them. You can use a single block for a sweet mug rug, or mix and match them to create a whole Valentine quilt. Whether you prefer traditional piecing or a more modern look, there is a ‘scrap-friendly’ heart here for everyone. So, grab your favorite pink and red bins, claim your creative ‘me-time,’ and let’s sew something beautiful together.

How to Use Your Quilt Blocks

A few of these patterns are for a quilt, but most of them are for a single quilt block. There are lots of things you can do with a single block that show your love, or make your space pretty for the holiday. Here are some ideas you can create with your pretty creations.

  • Mug Rug: Size down your fabric pieces, or just add a binding around a single block for a thoughtful gift.
  • Throw Pillow: Sew several small blocks together, or size up your fabric pieces to make the size block you want. Then turn your beautiful heart into a throw pillow (or two or three!).
  • Pot Holder: Add heat-resistant batting, backing, and binding. With that you will have a perfectly completed bit of love for your kitchen.
  • Table Runner: Sew just one row of hearts together for a LOVE-ly table decoration; it’s a quick way to make a pretty table setting.
  • Place Mats: Speaking of tables, you can also make placemats from a single quilt block. Just add a background fabric to make it the size and shape you want!
  • ‘Heart’felt Bag: You can add a heart to an existing bag; that’s the quickest use. You can also use the heart as a focus piece for a handmade bag as a real treat. Here are some free bag patterns if you are looking to make something truly unique.
