Medallion Star Quilts
Medallion star quilts usually have a big star design in the center of the quilt. These quilts are often square-shaped. Here are some easy medallion star quilts that are perfect for beginner quilters.
Half Square Triangle Star Baby is a fast and easy baby quilt pattern that will teach you a short-cut method for making half-square triangles. I used a solid background fabric and some cute nautical-themed fabrics to make an adorable quilt for a little boy. This 40” x 40” quilt pattern is fat quarter friendly, too.
If you like the Star Baby Quilt but want to sew something larger, check out my Big Star Quilt! Finishing at 64” x 64” it’s perfect for snuggling on the couch. After you have sewn all of the half-square triangles you need, you’ll sew them together with some extra background pieces. There is no sashing to slow you down.
This square Carpenter’s Star Throw Quilt Pattern has a finished quilt size of 66” x 66”. It features the classic Carpenter’s star design that you can make with half-square triangles. A cute border frames the center star.
I think any star quilt can be Christmas-themed if you use the right fabrics, but the Merry Stars Quilt is especially cute for the holidays. Some of the patches are pretty big, which helps to make it fast to sew.

Classic Quilt Layouts with Stars
The classic quilt layout is in a grid with rows and columns. These classic quilt designs are still popular a hundred years after they were first invented.
The Ohio Star is a traditional quilt block that is popular again in quilts of all sizes. This Quarter Ohio Star Quilt Pattern makes coordinating your fabrics a breeze. It uses 7 fat quarters (pre-cut 18” x 21” pieces of fabric) and 4 1/2 yards of background fabric to make a 71” x 86” twin-size quilt. This quilt also works excellent with scraps.
This Stars and Irish Chain Quilt Pattern was inspired by an Amish quilt I saw in a picture. The Variable Star block is a traditional quilt block that is popular again in quilts of all sizes. This pattern has 13 star blocks and 12 Irish chain blocks for a classic-looking quilt that will be unique depending on the fat quarters you choose.

Modern Quilt Layouts with Stars
How many big sawtooth stars can you fit on a quilt? That’s a great question. Make the Superstar Quilt to find out. The finished size of this quilt is a generous 60’’ wide by 80’’ long. It’s not what most quilters would call a twin-sized quilt, but I’ve seen plenty of store-bought twin quilts that size and smaller.
The Oh Holy Night Christmas Quilt will keep you singing as you sew. Use my free quilt pattern to make a small Christmas quilt with a pieced star and the words ‘Oh holy night…’ in appliqué letters. The finished size of this quilt is 36” x 36”, so it would make a sweet baby quilt too.

Easy Star Quilts Using Just 3 Yards of Fabric
Three-yard quilt patterns are really popular right now because these easy patterns are great for using fabrics in your stash. They make great lap quilts, baby quilts, or small throw quilts. The 3-Yard Sawtooth Star pattern is simple but stunning. These traditional quilt blocks are made with flying geese units and squares, which is why they are so easy. You’ll also love how easy it is to quilt a smaller quilt like this on your home sewing machine. After learning how to make it, you’ll put this sawtooth star quilt block in other quilts too.
This Amish Star Quilt is also made with just 3 yards and is perfect for a lap quilt or a baby quilt. There are so many color variations that would look amazing, but I chose to use classic blue and cream fabrics.
I hung my 3-Yard Twin Star Quilt near the stairs leading up to my sewing room. It welcomes friends to sew with me! This traditional block is one of my favorites. It alternates with uneven 9-patch blocks for movement and variety.
