Stop the Quilt Math: 12 Free Patterns That Actually Fit Your Needs
I know it’s hard to find high-quality free queen size quilt patterns. The first quilt I ever made was a queen – it’s an important size! The problem I found is that most free patterns stop at the throw size, leaving you to do the stressful “quilt math” to scale them up. Whether you are leaning into the 2026 “intentional making” trend or simply want a stunning, bed-sized project that won’t break the bank, I promise these free quilt patterns will deliver the inspiration and results you deserve.
Below, you’ll find a curated selection of free patterns that are either naturally queen-sized (90″ x 108″) or incredibly simple to expand. From minimalist modern designs to traditional favorites, these projects are perfect for transforming your bedroom into a cozy, handmade retreat.
Common Quilt Sizes Chart

I like to have as much information as possible so that the time I spend on a quilt is just right. Since quilt patterns are all different dimensions it’s good to know where you have some wiggle room.
The chart above is a simple graphic that is helpful for finding patterns that fit your general needs. If you’re like me and need even more information, click here for my article, “Standard Quilt Sizes: Expert Advice and Printable Chart for Making Quilts!”

Naturally Queen-Sized Patterns:
You can add borders and rows to scale up your quilt pattern, but it’s not necessary for the first group of patterns. They will all be usable on a queen size bed. If you are particular about extra length for tucking the pillows, or extra width so it hangs just right, use my quick math tip.
Quick Math – Scaling Cheat Sheet
To add 10 inches of width: Add a 5.25″ border to the left and right sides.
To add 10 inches of length: Add a 10.5″ border only to the bottom (the foot) of the quilt. This avoids having a bulky seam at the top where your pillows sit.

Endless Journey

You will only need nine fabrics for the Endless Journey (that you really can finish). The strip sets are foundational in building the beautiful design on this queen size quilt. You will actually make an irregular shape, and then trim it to a 90.5″ square. Remember, you can make borders from the background to make sure your quilt stays tucked in or allows for proper coverage.
Neon Dreams – Confident Beginner

Flying geese units and Irish Chain are the winners of Neon Dreams (and yes, I love the back too!). It won’t take long at all to piece this queen size quilt top, and you’ll have a 102.5″ square quilt by the end of the weekend.
If you need to scale down: Bring this down to a standard Queen without losing the design by removing the outermost row and column of sashing and blocks. You’ll end up with an 88.5” square, which is a true fit for a standard 10″ deep mattress.

Between The Lines – Modern Vintage

There are only a few steps to make this beautiful queen size quilt. It’s beginner friendly and so fun! You’ll sew nine square blocks, and then cut triangles and strips. I’m seeing the older prints (Grandmacore or Cottagecore) and retro designs making a huge comeback this year. I think this pattern is perfect for the Modern Vintage trend happening now.
