The 2.5″ Shortcut: 15+ Free Jelly Roll Sewing Patterns

|

I used to spend hours hunched over a cutting mat before I could even think about turning on my sewing machine. Now, I look at my 2.5″ pre-cuts as my secret weapon for a fast finish. There is something so satisfying about skipping the tedious prep work and jumping straight into the creative part of a project. I love that I can pick a bundle of fabric in the morning and have a finished quilt top or a new accessory by the time I’m done with my afternoon coffee.

These free jelly roll sewing patterns go beyond simple stripes and really show off the pretty colors and texture in your fabric strips. Clear out your stash without committing to a design that takes weeks to finish. From home decor to bags, these patterns prove you don’t need a lot of time (or fabric) to make something fabulous.

For Beginners: What is a Jelly Roll Fabric Bundle?

A jelly roll is a fabric bundle of 2.5″ wide strips cut WoF (width of fabric) from cotton quilting fabric. Is it worth it to buy them? Here’s the math: One yard of fabric will yield 14 WOF (width of fabric) strips, so one jelly roll contains three yards of fabric that’s already cut for you.

Most fabric companies, including Moda Fabrics, Riley Blake, Free Spirit, Robert Kaufman, and QT Fabrics, offer their fabric collections in jelly roll strip sets. It’s a great way to get a variety of colors and prints that you know will coordinate beautifully. I also enjoy seeing all of the designs in a collection all in one place.

Why I Love Jelly Roll Projects

I also love using jelly rolls as a shortcut for fast and easy patchwork blocks. A good sewing hack that saves me time is this girl’s best friend!
