I love sewing 3-yard quilts. These patterns use just three simple 1-yard cuts of fabric to create a gorgeous, sizeable throw. This mega-collection of free and simple patterns is designed to cut out the tedious prep work and let you jump straight to the rewarding part – piecing the pretty fabric into a complete quilt top!
Consider this your antidote to feeling “quilty guilty” and starting another big project that might end up in your pile of PhD (partially half done) projects. You really can transform three yards into a beautiful gift or a cozy snuggle quilt over a single afternoon or a fun weekend. Be sure to bookmark this article so you can come back to find new patterns. I am working on more beautiful designs that I am excited to share. Thanks for sewing along!
What Size Quilt Will My Three Yards Make?

A three-yard quilt is a perfect size for a throw quilt, baby quilt, or lap quilt. For most of these patterns, three yards of fabric are enough to finish the top of the quilt only. You will use more to back and bind your quilt.
The benefits of this size quilt are that you can finish it quickly and easily, and you can use your domestic sewing machine to quilt it yourself using straight-line or free motion quilting.
Here’s a link to my printable quilt size chart. This downloadable chart shows standard mattress sizes for crib, twin (or single bed), twin xl, double, queen, king, and California king as well as suggested quilt widths and lengths for all of these dimensions.
How Do I Coordinate Fabrics?
Here’s my simple formula for a stunning quilt:
- Find a beautiful ‘focus fabric’ that you (or the quilt’s recipient) absolutely love.
- Choose one coordinating fabric that is lighter.
- Choose one coordinating fabric that is darker.
That’s it, simple right? Now let’s get started!

What Supplies Do I Need?

Besides 3 yards of fabric from your stash or your local quilt shop, here are some basic sewing supplies you will need:

- thread
- pins or sewing clips
- at least one acrylic ruler (6” x 24” is a good size), a rotary cutter, and cutting mat
- a walking foot is helpful if you want to use straight-line quilting to finish your quilt
- Optional: I love using my AccuQuilt fabric cutter
