Why is it called a Fat Quarter?

A standard quarter-yard piece of fabric is 9 inches by 42-44 inches. A fat quarter piece of fabric measures approximately 18″ by 21″. This nearly-square piece of fabric can be more user friendly for quilt designs and are great for quilters of all experience levels.
Fat quarter-friendly quilt patterns are designed specifically to use FQs. That means that the cutting instructions take into account the 18” x 21” fabric dimensions. It also means that you shouldn’t end up with much fabric left over, but sometimes pattern designers aren’t as specific or careful as others. Either way, you can use your fabric stash regardless of sizing. All of these free patterns include step-by-step photo instructions.
