Sew-In Vs. Fusible Fabric Stabilizer

There are several brands of foam fabric stabilizer that I use. There are only small differences between them, except for the fact that some are fusible and others are sew-in. I prefer to work with sew-in fabric stabilizer because I don’t like how fabric fused to stabilizer sometimes gets wrinkled, so I’d rather just sew and quilt the fabric and foam together.

If you haven’t found a favorite brand of flexible foam stabilizer yet, I suggest you try these brands (listed in order of my favorites):

My Go-To Step One

Sewing colorful fabric with sewing machine

Most (but not all) of my bag or basket projects begin by basting the fabric and stabilizer together. You can use this fused piece as fabric as-is for your bag, or you can quilt it for even more texture and interest.

Because I do it so often, I made a video showing the basting technique. You can read more about it here. You can do so much with this technique; it’s not limited to making bags!
