Little Bow Headbands for girls & tweens (a sewing tutorial)

A couple years ago I wrote a series of tutorials for making headbands with FOE (fold over elastic) and ribbon, but this time I wanted to use fabric.

I love the beautiful fabric I got to work with too – it’s called Francis by Anna Griffin for Blend Fabrics. This sewing project is perfect for scraps too.

YOU WILL NEED:

Fabric and notions: – Main fabric – Coordinating fabric – Fold over elastic, 1’’ wide (or other 1’’ wide elastic) – Safety pins for turning – 1 large and 1 small – Needle and thread for hand sewing

CUTTING

From the main fabric, cut: – 1 rectangle 3 1/2’’ x 12’’ – 1 rectangle 3 1/2’’ x 8’’ Tip: for a small child, cut the elastic 1’’ shorter. From the coordinating fabric, cut: – 1 rectangle 3 1/2’’ x 7’’

CUTTING

From the contrasting fabric for the pockets and binding, cut: – 1 rectangle 6’’ x 17’’ – 1 strip 2 1/4’’ x 30’’ (or smaller strips to sew together that will equal at least 30’’ – as seen in the diagrams above)

Variation:  To make a plain headband with no bow, cut one rectangle of fabric 3 1/2’’ x 19’’. Sew using Steps 2-5 and 8.
