Some of you have been asking to see how my sewing room makeover is coming… I know it’s been two weeks since I’ve posted about it and the reason why is because it’s a big mess!
The wood floors were done for less than a day…
(and during that time my kids had lots of sock races up here)…
Before this I teased my friend Emily about how much stuff they owned when we helped them move. And then she helped me move my sewing stuff up from the back bedroom, the garage, and the front of the house, lol! Okay, my bad. I have more. It’s soooo easy to underestimate how much stuff you have until it’s time to pack it up.
We realized that my big Ikea cubby storage shelves have been moved so many times that they probably won’t make it up one more set of stairs. So I am planning new storage… with the help of Pinterest! I made a this board to save sewing room ideas.
So that’s the progress my friends! I’m working in my studio amidst a huge mess, but it’s a beautiful mess and I’m so happy every minute I’m in there. 🙂
So, what have you been sewing up this week? Did you make something with one of my free sewing tutorials or patterns? I would love to see! Tag me on Instagram @sewcanshe.

Be a basketmaker! Sure, you can sew, but did you know that you can make amazing baskets too using your sewing machine, some fabric and the same materials that you use for your other projects?
Have you fallen in love with Quilt as You Go yet? It’s a fun technique for quilts, of course, but I’m having lots of fun using it for pouches and tote bags too.
I’m so excited to share with you the pattern for our first mini quilt of 2018… Flora! This beautiful little quilt was designed by the very talented Lauren of Molly & Mama…
At my daughter Chloe’s high school (can you believe my baby started high school???), the lunch lines are so long that she has been skipping lunch! She’s always starving by the time she gets home because she doesn’t want to carry a big lunch bag as well as her heavy backpack – poor girl!
Looking for free table runner patterns? I gathered up all my favorites in one place – here are free quilt patterns for table runners for fall, winter, spring and summer!
I am so in love with the beautiful look of simple patchwork quilts with lots of squares. This is the perfect way to use up fabric scraps like I did, or you can make a beautifully coordinated quilt with pre-cut 2 1/2’’ square fabric pieces that come in mini-charm packs.
I’m also in love with the process. If you feel like quilt making is your escape from the world and sitting down to sew for a few hours makes your troubles fade away… this is the quilt for you!
Sew an easy beautiful apron with this free sewing pattern that only uses one yard of fabric! Whether you are sewing for yourself or for a friend, an apron always comes in handy and makes a great gift. This blog post includes a link to a free template that I digitized for you.

A couple months ago I ran out of patience with my old Elna serger… even though the sewing function still worked okay, she was a beast to thread and the presser foot lifter had broken off, which made inserting fabric tricky. Plus she lacked the feature that i dreamed about most… jet air loopers.
Learn how to make a fabric covered rope bowl in under an hour! This easy sewing project is perfect for using up scraps. Do you save long skinny cotton fabric strips like I do? Do you have a stash of…

Caroline, I have a similar room (although not nearly as large) and I use the Ikea Pax for storage. https://www.seasonedhomemaker.com/sewing-craft-studio/ It is deep enough to hold extra machines (and I have a ton) and keep the dust off. They aren’t cheap, but they really hold up and I have no sagging shelves. If you need more info, let me know.
Hi Leslie! Thanks so much for your input on the Pax shelves. I love the clean lines. And it’s awesome that they hold heavy machines without sagging. I see a trip to Ikea in my near future, and I need to hook the trailer up before I go! 🙂 xoxo
If you’re going to IKEA soon, look online for the $20 off $150 coupon! It expired 9/5. And if you take a second person with you, each of you can use it! 🙂
Oh My! I am soooooo jealous. I have been wanting to build a sewing/craft studio for ages. I live in my parent’s old house and the designated 8×18 sewing/storage room is so overrun with mine and my late Mom’s sewing stuff I can not find anything. By the time I do I no longer have the energy to sew back there. It is also very dark and depressing with just 1 tiny window and bad lighting. I moved one of the sewing machines to the space behind the couch in the living room. I have been wanting to start sewing draperies for my niece who is a decorator and a nice studio would be wonderful. I have 2 questions: How big is your room and what in the world is that wooden table with the weird thing attached to It? Can not wait to see your room all set up. Love the floors you put in.
Hi Deborah! This room is approximately 36′ x 20′. If you can sacrifice the space to put your sewing area somewhere you will love to be – I bet you’ll find yourself sewing more often and enjoying it even more. 🙂
Your new sewing room looks already amazing! I love the floors and the size of it! Nice to spread out all your stuff! Thank you as well for the show off party!! I always find cute ideas!

And to answer your second question… that’s my Grace Frame. You can read about it here: https://www.sewcanshe.com/blog/2014/8/29/show-off-saturday-linky-party-i-got-a-grace-frame-for-my-juki
Before this, I kept the Grace Frame in my bedroom because it wouldn’t fit in any other room, lol!
xoxo
