Monthly Mini Quilts for March – the free Bolt Mini Quilt Pattern

I’m so excited to bring you a mini quilt pattern from one of my very favorite designers… Sedef Imer from Down Grapevine Lane. Her beautiful blog is one of my favorites, plus she recently released the book Quilt Petite… which is all about mini quilts! Sedef named this darling and modern mini quilt ‘Bolt.’

Sedef’s mini quilt turned out so much softer and sweeter with her fabric choices… don’t you love how different two quilts from the same pattern can look? 

So without further ado… here’s the Bolt Mini Quilt Pattern by Sedef Imer of Down Grapevine Lane.

(Caroline’s tips: this pattern may seem long, but it is mostly the cutting instructions. if you are not working with a tablet or computer closeby, I suggest using a service like printfriendly.com to print this blog post without all the extras.)

FINISHED SIZE:  9” x 12”

• RST means right sides together

• HST means half square triangle

• Use a scant ¼ “ seam allowance when joining pieces

MATERIALS:

• 10” squares of 11 assorted print fabrics

• Fat quarter of white or other background fabric

• Backing 13” x 16”

• Quilt batting 13” x 16”

• Binding 2 ¼” x50”

• Rotary cutter, ruler and mat

• Curved quilting pins or quilt basting spray

• Sewing machine with ¼” foot and walking foot

CUTTING

Following the colour chart above:

Colour 1: 

• (1) 3 ½” square

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 2:

• (2) 3 ½” squares

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 3:

• (2) 3 ½” squares

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 4:

• (2) 3 ½” squares

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 5:

• (1) 3 ½” square

Colour 6:

• (2) 2” squares

Colour 7:

• (1) 3 ½” square

• (2) 2” x 3 ½” rectangles

Colour 8:

• (2) 3 ½” squares

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 9:

• (2) 3 ½” squares

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

Colour 10:

• (1) 3 ½” square

• (1) 2” x 3 ½” rectangle

• (1) 2” square

Colour 11:

• (1) 2” square

Background:

• (16) 2” squares

ASSEMBLY

This mini quilt consists entirely of half square triangles (HSTs) and flying geese units.

To make a HST, you will need two fabric squares. Draw a diagonal on the back of one of the squares, and place RST against the other square. Sew on the traced line. Trim one side ¼” away from the seam. Press the seam towards the darker colour.

To make a flying geese unit, you will need two fabric squares and a rectangle. Draw diagonal lines on the back of the two squares. Place a square on one side of the rectangle, RST, and with the diagonal pointing towards the middle of the rectangle as shown. Sew on the traced line. Trim off excess fabric ¼” away from the seam. Press towards the triangle. Repeat with the other square on the other end of the rectangle.

3. Make the following flying geese units: (NB: for the last two units just sew a triangle onto one side of the rectangle).

4. Sew the HSTs and flying geese shown in the diagram together. Then sew these units to each other. Press seams open.

5. Sew the HST and flying geese shown in the diagram together. Then sew these units to each other. Press seams open.

6. Sew the units you made in steps 4 and 5 together and press the central seam open. Your quilt top is ready for quilting.

FINISHING

1. Make your quilt sandwich. Quilt backing at the bottom (right side facing down), batting on top of that, then the quilt top, right side facing up. Baste the three layers together with quilting pins or quilt basting spray.

2. Quilt as desired. Trim off excess fabric and batting.

3. Bind with mitered corners using your preferred binding method or Caroline’s tutorial.
