Product Review: OVO Travel Iron & Steamer

A mini iron is a treasure in the sewing room, and on the road, so when I was asked if I wanted to preview and test the new OVO Travel Iron and Fabric Steamer from Reliable, of course I said ‘YES!’ – the Velocity 200IR that I tested nearly 2 years ago is still my favorite iron ever. It is hot and makes LOTS of steam with no dripping.

So I had high hopes for this little baby too. It’s not exactly light (the manual says it’s 1.5 lbs) and it feels pretty substantial in your hand. 

It’s only about 4” x 7” in length and width.

What would I want a travel iron for? Quilt retreats, classes, and QUILT MARKET!!!

I don’t obsess over wrinkles in my clothes, but I do obsess over wrinkles in my cotton fabric.

So I pulled out some fat quarters (which suffer the most from folds and wrinkles, IMHO) and filled the water tank up so see how the OVO Travel Iron would do.

Do you see wrinkles in the fat quarter shown above? They’re gone. And believe me, they where there. The combination of iron + steam completely decimated the wrinkles.

Next I hung up a fat quarter and tested the steam function of the OVO. It got out the wrinkles almost entirely.

Keep in mind that these are my prized Tula Pink Coordinates fat quarters that travelled home in my suitcase and have been sitting folded since Quilt Market last October.

I switched back to the iron + steam position (without the clip-on steaming brush) to finish getting out the wrinkles. No problem.

I’m totally bringing this little cutie with me to Quilt Market in October because I might actually want to have wrinkle free clothes for that – and I might have a booth too! But that’s still in the planning stage. 🙂

Along with the clip-on steamer brush, it also comes with a heat-resistant carrying case. I wouldn’t put it away hot, but the manual says you can use it to set the OVO Travel Iron down on if you need to use it without a proper ironing board.

I totally wanted to take this on my cruise to St. Thomas last month (where I found a fabric shop), but alas, irons of any kind are not allowed in staterooms. Even if I did sneak it on board, I wouldn’t be bragging about that here because I want to keep cruising!
