Here’s a free sewing pattern to use up all those cute holiday scraps! This little Christmas stocking zipper pouch is just the right size for a handful of treats – plus it makes a great gift card holder. For the front, I used a quilt-as-you-go technique on cotton batting. The back of the stocking zipper pouch is simpler. Both sides have a cuff made with fleece; another fabric could be used instead.

Finished size: approximately 6 1/4” tall by 6” wide.

Christmas Stocking Zipper Pouch – Free Sewing Pattern.

You will need:

• Cotton fabric scraps for Quilt-As-You-Go
• Scraps of white or off-white fleece
• 1/4 yard lining fabric
• 4” or longer zipper
• 2 pieces of quilt batting at least 8” square (Warm & Natural or other batting that holds together well)
• 3” of twill tape or ribbon
• 1” swivel snap clip that fits the ribbon
• Fabric marking pen
• Regular marking pen (such as a Sharpie marker)
• Point turner
• Pinking shears (optional, but helpful)

Cutting:

From the white or off-white fleece cut:

• 2 rectangles 5” x 2 1/2”

From the lining fabric cut:

• 2 from the Holiday Zipper Pouch Lining Pattern Piece

Note: You will see that on the lining piece, I cut off the toe off the stocking. I did this because it was really tricky to make the toe stay in place in my finished pouches – plus there was no logical place to leave an opening in the lining. By cutting off the toe, I solved both problems – and I think that the pouch is just as usable as before. But if you disagree, go ahead and use the exterior template to cut out your lining pieces. Just don’t complain to me when it doesn’t work out like you think it will. 🙂

Quilt-As-You-Go

1. Use the regular marking pen to trace the Holiday Zipper Pouch exterior template onto both pieces of quilt batting; trace one in reverse. Draw the line between the bottom of the boot and the boot cuff also.

2. Use a Quilt-As-You-Go technique to completely fill the bottom part of one traced boots (not the cuff). Overlapping the lines will ensure that you can cut the size pieces you will need. This will be the front.

 Tip: The middle of the boot is a great place to use a fussy cut holiday motif.

3. For the back of the pouch, center a 6” x 7 1/2” or larger piece of fabric over the bottom of the boot and sew quilting lines.

4. Use the pattern template for the pouch exterior and the fabric marking pen to re-mark the line between the boot and the cuff.

5. Place one of the fleece rectangles face down on the quilted area, with one long edge 1/4” over the line. Stitch the fleece with a 1/4” seam allowance (stitching along the marked line).

Open the fleece and smooth flat over the cuff area.

Following steps 4 and 5 above, sew a cuff onto the back boot piece too.

6. Pin the exterior pattern template to the quilted pieces, matching the line to the cuff/boot seam. Make sure that the entire area under the pattern piece is covered with scraps and quilted. Add more fabric, if needed. Cut out the front and back exterior pieces.

Sewing the Zipper Pouch

Sew all seams with a 1/4” seam allowance unless otherwise noted. Use a zipper foot for steps 1-3 below. 

1. Pin the zipper between the front exterior and lining as follows: center the zipper face down on the top of the exterior front cuff. Place the corresponding lining piece on top, face down. Pin and stitch along the top.

2. Flip the lining around to the back and press gently. Don’t melt the zipper teeth with your iron!

3. Place the unsewn zipper tape face down on the top of the exterior back cuff. Place the other lining piece on top, face down. Pin and stitch along the top.

6. Flip the lining around to the back and press gently.

Finish the Zipper Pouch

1. Wrap the ribbon through the snap clip. With the lining pieces out of the way, baste the ribbon ends to the right side of the front cuff.

2. With the zipper slider near the middle of the cuff, place the exterior pieces right sides together and the lining right sides together. Fold the zipper teeth away from the lining. Pin around all of the curved edges.

3. Sew all the way around the lining and exterior. Do not sew the straight edge on the lining.

4. Trim away the ends of the zipper. Make clips and notches along all curved edges, especially in the exterior. If you have pinking shears you can simply trim all the way around – except the the straight edge in the lining. Clip the corner at the toe (on the exterior).

5. Turn the pouch right side out through the opening in the lining. Use a point turner to turn the toe point and heel completely right side out. Press gently.

6. Fold the raw edges of the lining straight edge to the inside 1/4”. Press. Stitch close to the edge. Tuck the lining inside the pouch and zip closed.
