Prague’s Best for Crafters: 10 Unforgettable Highlights

|

Prague is such an artistic and beautiful place. It’s the capital city of the Czech Republic, and provides endless wonder and infinite creative inspiration. Walking around the streets brings constant surprises as stunning spires and finely detailed architecture suddenly appears from behind stark and chunky concrete buildings.

In the older part of the city you can eat and shop to your heart’s content; and the whole city smelled of chimney cake which you can purchase all over the old part of town. I particularly enjoyed the fantastic window displays and would have stayed longer if life permitted. See what inspired me!

Gorgeous Fabric Displays

The fabric in this window was what first caught my eye. Everything in this little shop was gorgeous, and practical. Most of the material was stretch knit, satin, and down. I found a remanent basket with gorgeous bag lining, and got to admire the well organized wall of discounts!

Bunches Of Down Fabric

One of the shops I walked into had a table of chunky, shiny, bolts that took up a third of the floor space. It makes sense to sell so much of this fabric as it was really quite cold. In fact, there was snow on the ground in patches. Where I live in Florida, there’s not much use for down, and no snow.

Hand Embroidery From 1945

There were several displays of hand craft that were made by the imprisoned people during their time at Terezin. I was reminded of how working with my hands brings purpose, and I was impressed at the history that was preserved in these circumstances.

This is a picture of one of the main squares in Terezin that was hand embroidered. It’s remarkable to me how resourceful the prisoners were both in craft and clothing. Awful as it was, even the clothing holds the marks of many hands working together for the uplifting of others.

Recognize This Guy?

I have a similar pattern for this Easter Gnome in my free bunny pattern post, and I was thrilled to see one in this chocolate shop. This gnome has legs, and fur around his ears which is different from the pattern I found, but it was fun to spot some gnomes.

Ceramic Gnomes Too!

I spotted these ceramics in another shop and just had to take a photo. I love the variety of shape and size, and the sweet personality of each piece. It just makes me happy.

Puppet In A Cone

Puppets are a big deal in Prague. These little guys are puppets on a stick. The heads are attached to the top so that you can pull the whole thing down into the cone, and then pop it out again for a sweet surprise. I might try to make a few of these in the near future. In this shop there were not only animals, but characters from children’s stories and popular TV shows.

Machine “Hand” Embroidery

This man had a machine that made a simple chain stitch. I asked him if I could video him for a minute. He said, “If you’re going to video, let me do something interesting for you.” Then he effortlessly (in 20 seconds) scrolled this design on a piece of cardstock for me. As you can see in the background, he’s a master of personalizing on just about anything you can imagine.

Prague Castle

Here is a small sample of the captivating gothic architecture that extends above the skyline, and endures for centuries of time. There are several famous architectural structures in and around Prague. Not all of it is gothic. In fact, there are several styles right next to each other in several places which add to the interest and intrigue.

There is a Patchwork Meeting in Prague and Brno (a nearby town) from the 23rd to the 27th of April this year. It looks amazing!
