My Modern Stars Quilt with matchstick quilting was my entry into QuiltCon one year. It wasn’t accepted, and I’m okay with that. I’m still trying to figure out what modern quilting is! I think the most modern thing about this quilt is the matchstick quilting… it’s straight line quilting to an extreme! Here are my tips for doing straight line quilting 4 different ways.
I’ve done done quite a bit of straight line quilting before, but this was by far the most I’ve ever tried on a quilt. It was kind of an experiment…
My first set of lines was about 3/8” apart, and I decided to quilt down the middle of each to make it even more intense. I’m also really happy with the effect that the gray thread had. I had first planned to use matching orange thread for the quilting, but that orange solid fabric was just so warm that I started to think it was too much. I picked out my first few lines of orange quilting and tried gray and loved it. It definitely cools the color down a bit.

I’m also in love with the process. If you feel like quilt making is your escape from the world and sitting down to sew for a few hours makes your troubles fade away… this is the quilt for you!
