Pattern Review: Two Zip Hipster from DUMD
You already know that I’m getting ready to go on vacation with my husband (& no kids, yay!) because I recently showed off the bathing suit that I made (#selfishsewing). After that was done I started thinking that I need a small-ish bag that I can carry essentials in besides my usual purse. I decided to try the Two Zip Hipster from Dog Under My Desk because it looked like just the right size and I love the cross-body strap option (more secure when traveling I think).
I am totally a metal zipper junkie, lol! This one is a YKK brass jeans zipper from WAWAK. If you hurry and order, they are buy-two-get-one-free through tomorrow.
For the bag exterior I used fabric from Ellen Luckett Baker’s Garden Collection. Its a cotton-linen blend made in Japan that is perfect for bags. I made a purse last year with Japanese fabric too {see here}. It has held up extremely well and I’m still using it.
Besides the main compartment (that has a flat pocket), there’s also an easy to reach side pocket and a small zipper pocket on the front. I used these components as a fun excuse to mix several prints from Ellen’s fabric collection.
Erin’s ingenious zipper installation at the top was seriously easy and lets the bag open very wide. That lining fabric is from Anna Griffin’s Grace Collection. All of the hardware can be found at Joann’s or online.
Even though this bag has lots of features, the pattern’s easy to follow directions and step by step photos make it foolproof to sew, even for a beginner. My bag looks so professional, I’m sure no one would guess that I made it. Well, unless they know me. 🙂
You can find the pattern {here} in the Dog Under My Desk pdf pattern shop. Be sure to check out all of Erins extremely well-written patterns while you are there. I’ve also made and reviewed the Get Carded Wallet pattern.
Good luck!

Looks great! I would make one for myself. Nothing goes better than some selfish sewing, lol.
I love Erin’s patterns but since this is one I don’t have, I would love to win it! Who would I make the purse for? ME! I have several of her Zip and Go purses and I really need the 2 zip hipster!
I bought and loved the get carded little purse and would love to make this one for myself and my daughter. 🙂
I love this! I would make it for me because I do not get to sew for me very often. I need selfish sewing!
I would love to make this bag for the exact same reasons you are making it – for traveling. I have a purchased one that is very similar with many zippers, but it is all black and it would be fun to be able to choose a colorful option! Thanks for the chance to win!!
I would love to make this for a dear friend who deserves to be spoiled a bit,
I love this bag and would make it for my new daughter-in-law, she would find it so handy. I might even make one for myself too.
I would love to win this pattern.
I’d first make one for me, ready for our holiday to Rome (Haven’t been on a proper holiday since our honeymoon, so looking forwards to it).
Then I’d make one for my mum, as I made her the get carded wallet for her birthday and she loved it, so would probably be really pleased with a matching bag!
I love these style bags! I would make several for myself and others for Christmas gifts!
Love this bag style. Have been wanting to make myself one for so long.
My daughters would also like it.
I’ve been doing more sewing for myself and this would be a great bag for running errands, etc.
I would make some for my 4 tween cousins as Christmas gifts. It looks like a really practical size and I’d love to make one for my mum to take on her hour long bus ride to work to hold her book, glasses case etc. I think I probably need one too! It looks like you could fit a small sewing or knitting/crochet project in one of those pockets along with the usual handbag stuff. zennabanenna(at)gmail(dot)com
I would make the bag for myself. I need somthing smaller to use when I have to carry my grandson when I go out for short trips. I just love the fabrics you used
This would have to be made for …me!! I love it and don’t think you are ever too old to have something fun!!
I would start with me, but then I would probably get requests to make one for each of my kids. It would also be a fun gift for my Mom and sisters. Great bag!
I love Vera Bradley purses and this one is similar to one of hers. However, I don’t like her prices so I can quilt my own to fit my taste! Look out, Vera!!
People always ask me if my Two Zip Hipster is a Vera. It’s made from my alma mater’s fabric, so I find it hysterical! I’m always telling people that it’s not my skill in making it; it’s Erin’s in her design and pattern-making skills!
I would make one for my mother-in-law, she only uses cross body bags. I’d also make one each for my daughters, and use as gifts for my cousins for Christmas. Of course first I’d have to test it out by making one for myself!
Love, love this bag and I would love to make it for ME as a start. My husband and I are getting ready to leave for a vacation in mid-August and I was thinking of making a cross-body bag. What a coïncidence that you have this one to show off. Love the fabric.
I love this bag! Perfect for shopping excursions, walks in the park or a museum visit. Can’t wait to make this bag, not only for myself but for my girlfriends (I see Christmas gift list full of these).
I have the Get Carded Wallet pattern and love it. I’m using the wallet I made now. I would love to win this hipster bag. I would definitely make one for myself. I know my niece would love it to, so maybe one for her for Christmas. Thanks for a chance to win!
Melissa
I love it! I would make a few!! I see Christmas gifts using this pattern. 🙂
Cross body bags are my favorite! I’d love to brush up on my bag making skills…this looks like the perfect one to do that. My aunt and sister-in-laws would love their own. Thanks for the review and chance to win!!
You can definitely "brush up" with Erin’s patterns. In fact, you’ll become an even better sewer and bag maker. Her patterns are addictive!
Purely selfish, I would make the bag for me. 🙂 I always choose purses I can carry cross-body, and I need a new purse right now, so the timing would be perfect.
I would make it for my daughter.

This looks great! I would make it for myself … time for a new bag!
HI, I would make it for myself to be honest, I could use a bag like this. I take the bus and this is perfect for going over my shoulder, and be hands free. It is plenty big for my reading glasses, sunglasses and all the necessities I carry with me. I find it hard to find such cute bags at stores, they are always that plastic, leather type and I much prefer this style! Thanks!
I carry a Two Zip Hipster (getting ready to make a replacement because I’ve worn it out!) and it is SO AWESOME! I get so many compliments on it. I love the cross-body adjustable strap and it holds a lot without being too big.
I could definitely see making one of these cute bags for my sister. Of course, I’d want to make one for myself as well. 🙂
What a cute bag! I see mother/daughter matching bags in the same material combos but in different placement. Cute! Thanks for sharing.
I would make it for my daughter -she loves it when I can make her purse! One less thing for her to buy ; ) Thanks for the chance to play!
I would make the bag for my niece’s 16th birthday… she loves bags and I have the perfect fabric for it!
Love your fabric combinations! I’m inspired to make a bag for my daughter, but I just might have to make 2 so I can have one as well. I’m very curious about the zipper installation, especially since you used metal zippers.
Laura – Erin’s zipper methods on ALL her patterns are so wonderful!!!
I would make it for myself….I have a trip to London coming up and I need something light and fun!
I would make the bag for… myself because it looks really useful when carrying a baby on one arm! And then I’d have to make one for my elder daughter too, I’m sure!
What a cute bag! I would make one for both of my daughters. They each love the cross body style.
I would definitely make this bag for ME!!!!
I would make 3 of them – my two 21-22 year old daughters and me!
Very cool bag! I would make one for me for sure… and then maybe one for a couple of friends for Christmas 😉 thanks for the chance to win
I’m in desperate need of a new bag, so I’d make one for me. Then I’d make some for Christmas gifts.
I would sew one for our church sale benefitting people in Tanzania and one for me. I love the gussets where the purse is bigger w/out looking bigger. Love the top zip too.✂️
I would sew one for my sister-in-law who has cancer and one for myself.
I would sew one for my daughter. Across body style would be easier when she is wrangling two little boys.
I would definitely make a bag for myself, my two daughters and my mom. Christmas isn’t that far away! momik97(at)aol(dot)com
I would make this bag for myself! It would hold my kindle and all my necessaries at work without being bulky!
I would make one for me and probably make one for my mom also. Because she would have to help me due to being a beginning sewer!
Connie – Erin makes it SO EASY for a beginner! I used to be afraid of zippers. Not anymore!!! 🙂
Everyone seems to want to make these for their mom! I probably would too! And of course of for myself too!
I would make this bag for one of my granddaughters,I have 10,maybe I would have to make 10 bags. 🙂
The first one would be for me, no doubt. Then I would make two more–one for my BFF and one for her 12-year-old daughter. Then the 3 of us could go thrift shopping and adventuring in matching style.
The pattern is easy to reduce or enlarge and it’s so fun to make!
i would make two for twin girls at church who were recently diagnosed with cancer.
That would be so lovely and so thoughtful! I used to work with pediatric oncology patients. I’m also a 4-year breast cancer survivor!
Love the bag. I’ve been trying to find the perfect pattern for myself… This one might be it!
If I won, I would make a bag for each of my nieces, sister and sister-in-law.
I would start my Christmas sewing right away!! This year our son and his family (who we havent seen in 6 years is moving back home and these would be just perfect!!! To Oklahoma)
I’d make one for myself 🙂 Then maybe I might make some for christmas gifts!
I don’t need to win because I have ALL of Erin’s AWESOME patterns, but I just wanted to say this is adorable! I’m getting ready to make a fresh 2ZH for myself. I make her Zip and Go bag (smiliar to 2ZH but quicker and smaller) and Get Carded wallet for lots of people. Well, I pretty much make only her things for people.
Erin is an incredible designer and pattern maker! Every time I use a pattern that is not hers, I yell and wish she’d made it. 😉
You can get great ideas on her Flickr group or with #dogundermydesk on IG.
When tackling a smaller project (vs. large quilt) I normally make two – one for me and one for a gift. This way I am never torn about giving it away……. Love the pattern – shoulder swings are are great for shopping and travel!
I LOVE this kind of bag! The options offered with this one are terrific. I’d make it in a heartbeat!
btheisen58 (at) gmail (dot) com
Fabulous pattern, which would be perfect for my middle daughter, who hates to use a purse, but needs one sometimes. I’d also make the Get Carded Wallet to match.
This would HAVE to be made for my daughter – it’s just ‘made’ for her :o) !!
I would have to make this bag for me. It looks so practical — enough secure pockets for the important stuff (well, it’s all important, really) and small enough that it can’t get so overloaded that I can’t find a thing. Would love to win this pattern. Am already planning my fabrics!
It would be for me! I love bags and this one looks like the perfect size. Thanks
gussek at Hotmail dot com
Who would it be for? Me. Totally me. 😀

I would absolutely make this for me!
The first one would definitely be for me – and then I would make some for the 2 childrens homes in my town for the girls – very fun thing to do. Love this bag from the photos here
So cute! I would make it for me as my mini diaper bag 😉 (now that i’m on baby #2 I’ve given up with the real diaper bag and switched back to using my regular purse, just loading the extra junk into my car instead!!)

Wow – I have been looking for a bag pattern just like this one for ages. I had a very similar bag and it is now too old to use. I so miss it as it fitted all my essential items in it. So I have been on the lookout for the perfect pattern to replace my old bag. At last I have found it.

I love the bag. My best friend and I have our birthdays in August. Well we are a year apart but my birthday is on the 23rd and hers is on the 22nd.
