Pattern Review: Two Zip Hipster from DUMD

|

2 zip hipster.jpg

You already know that I’m getting ready to go on vacation with my husband (& no kids, yay!) because I recently showed off the bathing suit that I made (#selfishsewing). After that was done I started thinking that I need a small-ish bag that I can carry essentials in besides my usual purse. I decided to try the Two Zip Hipster from Dog Under My Desk because it looked like just the right size and I love the cross-body strap option (more secure when traveling I think).

I am totally a metal zipper junkie, lol! This one is a YKK brass jeans zipper from WAWAK. If you hurry and order, they are buy-two-get-one-free through tomorrow.

For the bag exterior I used fabric from Ellen Luckett Baker’s Garden Collection. Its a cotton-linen blend made in Japan that is perfect for bags. I made a purse last year with Japanese fabric too {see here}. It has held up extremely well and I’m still using it.

Besides the main compartment (that has a flat pocket), there’s also an easy to reach side pocket and a small zipper pocket on the front. I used these components as a fun excuse to mix several prints from Ellen’s fabric collection.

Erin’s ingenious zipper installation at the top was seriously easy and lets the bag open very wide. That lining fabric is from Anna Griffin’s Grace Collection. All of the hardware can be found at Joann’s or online.

Even though this bag has lots of features, the pattern’s easy to follow directions and step by step photos make it foolproof to sew, even for a beginner. My bag looks so professional, I’m sure no one would guess that I made it. Well, unless they know me. 🙂

You can find the pattern {here} in the Dog Under My Desk pdf pattern shop. Be sure to check out all of Erins extremely well-written patterns while you are there. I’ve also made and reviewed the Get Carded Wallet pattern.

Good luck!

People always ask me if my Two Zip Hipster is a Vera. It’s made from my alma mater’s fabric, so I find it hysterical! I’m always telling people that it’s not my skill in making it; it’s Erin’s in her design and pattern-making skills!

  17. Marti Taylor says:

I would make one for my mother-in-law, she only uses cross body bags. I’d also make one each for my daughters, and use as gifts for my cousins for Christmas. Of course first I’d have to test it out by making one for myself!

HI, I would make it for myself to be honest, I could use a bag like this. I take the bus and this is perfect for going over my shoulder, and be hands free. It is plenty big for my reading glasses, sunglasses and all the necessities I carry with me. I find it hard to find such cute bags at stores, they are always that plastic, leather type and I much prefer this style! Thanks!

    1. Julie Crooks says:

I don’t need to win because I have ALL of Erin’s AWESOME patterns, but I just wanted to say this is adorable! I’m getting ready to make a fresh 2ZH for myself. I make her Zip and Go bag (smiliar to 2ZH but quicker and smaller) and Get Carded wallet for lots of people. Well, I pretty much make only her things for people.

Erin is an incredible designer and pattern maker! Every time I use a pattern that is not hers, I yell and wish she’d made it. 😉

You can get great ideas on her Flickr group or with #dogundermydesk on IG.

  54. Shelly S. says:

My best friend is a handbag and shoe kinda girl and she has a birthday coming up…I think this would be just perfect for her as I never know what to get her! I think they would make great gifts for lots of friends actually!

  166. I have seen several finished Two Zip Hipsters, and I love how the different combos of patterns can really change the "feel" of the purse! I would probably make one for myself, and one for a friend. I’ve already made her one purse, but sharing is caring (and doubly so when it’s handmade, right?!)
