Have fun sewing cute 20 minute fleece beanie hats!

This week I decided to try Heidi & Finn’s Free Slouchy Beanie hat pattern… and I really got carried away! Or maybe Cadie got carried away with her silly hat faces, lol.

This free pattern is perfect for those knit or fleece scraps that are too big to throw away but too small to make a tee shirt or pair of pajama pants. As you can see, I used to have a lot of that size scraps hanging around my sewing room. But not anymore!

And seriously, when I took the amount of time I spent cutting and sewing and divided that by the number of hats that I made, it took me less than 20 minutes per hat!

Here are some tips in case you decide to try this pattern:

  1. The pattern states that you only need 1/4 yard of fabric, but that’s kind of misleading. If you go to the store and buy 1/4 yard, the piece of fabric will only be 9” tall and the main pattern piece is 12” tall. However, a 1/2 yard is plenty for two hats since you really only need a rectangle about 21” wide and 15” tall. Just keep that in mind.

  2. The pattern says that it goes up to size 6 years, but I needed big kid/grownup size hats. All I did was use a 1/4” seam allowance on my serger instead of a 1/2” seam allowance that the pattern states. Easy. On the not-very-stretchy pieces of knit fabric I did cut them out a little larger than the pattern.

  3. You don’t need a serger to make these. I just have one so I used it. ๐Ÿ™‚
