Dress Up Your Pet: 17 Easy DIY Pet Accessories and Outfits!
Nothing beats the cuteness of a pup in a handmade outfit! Anytime is the perfect time to raid your scrap bin and create a one of a kind costume for your fur baby. Show off your dog or cat’s “main character energy” by stitching up a custom look that shows off their one-of-a-kind personality.
These projects are some of my favorites because they are all about making sweet memories with our furry best friends. You really don’t need a complicated pattern or professional skills to make your pet the talk of the neighborhood, just a little bit of fabric and a whole lot of love. I’ve gathered my favorite DIY ideas to help you celebrate any occasion, so let’s get stitching and get those cameras ready!
Quick & Easy Accessories (Beginner Friendly)
Bow Tie Pet Bandana

A pet bandana is the perfect sewing project because it’s so fast and easy. You can start and finish in about an hour, I promise! I LOVE to dress up our dogs with bandanas. They look adorable no matter how much the bandana turns around. If the V-shape is in the front or the back (or the side), it doesn’t matter! It’s cute every way.
Although these are dog clothes, I’m sure a bandana would also look cute on a pet cat, pig, chicken, llama, ferret, goat, or human! Perfect for so many animal dress up fun ideas!
Collectible Beanie Babies Dog Costume

This photo is from hausbyjordie on Instagram. It is definitely the easiest costume, and the most comfortable for your pet if they are not used to having wearing clothes and accessories. It’s also great for procrastination! Grab some cardboard and paint, or get fancy with your vinyl cutter; make your dog into a beanie baby in minutes!
Easy Pet Collar

Learn how to sew a pet collar for your dog, cat, llama, or iguana! This fun and easy sewing project uses simple supplies – just fabric, a d-ring, and some hook & loop. It also gives your pet a custom look without being ‘extra’.
Collar and Cuffs

This is the only pattern that is not free, but it was so cute I just couldn’t resist! If you look closely under the bowtie you will even find some bling. Here is the link to the Etsy store Sofia and Friends.
Creative Costumes (No-Sew & Low-Sew)
Pupcake!

This cupcake costume is so adorable! It’s another no sew project made from a paper box and felt. You can check out the tutorial and use the same process to make other similar costumes. Visit Lovely Indeed for the free tutorial.
No Sew Homemade Dog Costumes

Dress up your pet with craft foam! There are several costume templates made from craft foam available at Craft Your Happiness. These costumes are very light weight and easy to make. If you fur baby doesn’t love to be adorned, perhaps this is a good place to start.
Teddy Bear Costume Hack

The face belongs to the dog, the rest is a plush! This no sew costume is a video tutorial on TikTok. It’s so much fun to watch even if you don’t want to use it for yourself. The hack is that you will use an existing stuffed bear and alter it so you put your dog’s face and front legs into the bear’s body. Here’s the link to the video.
Chia Pet DIY

This costume photo is for inspiration. You can combine some of the other patterns in this post to dress up your pet like a ch-ch-ch-chia! Measure your fur baby and make a pattern, then hot glue greens all over the place! You can even glue brown felt onto the shirt to make a faux collar and pant legs.
Note: The dress pattern further up is a great starting point for this costume. It’s super basic and leaves room for any kind of clever additions.

Food on your dog is easy and cute; and tacos are still IN! Here is a free tutorial using felt for the taco costume you’ve always wanted from Life at Cloverhill.

Sew A Dog Dress

This video tutorial will show you how to really dress up your pet. You can easily make a custom bodice pattern for your dog; no matter the size! You will learn how and where to measure, and then you can either add a skirt or use that bodice to hold things like tulle or tissue paper for any of your unique costume ideas.
Versatile Pajama Pattern

Here is a free sewing pattern with additional information and templates to turn the jammies into a costume. You can also let your imagination dictate your dog’s costume by making your own templates. Check out the pattern for inspiration and ideas. Get creative!
Witch Dog Costume

Here is a free sewing pattern by Mimi & Tara. You can use it for your small dog, but there are a few bigger sizes available. Talk about a main character! Leave the hat off if it feels too “Haloweeny”. It’s a winner!

If the tutu and wings aren’t enough, there’s a headband accessory! I found this tutorial on HGTV.com. I love a good ladybug costume, and I love versatile sewing projects; you get them both with this pattern.
Ewok

I love how the ears on the DIY dog costume match the dog’s fur color! You could buy one, but making your own is really sew much better. Add an Ewok or two to your national calendar. How cute is this for a character dress up day?
