I made this queen sized quilt to go on the bed in my guest room. Now I can’t wait for someone to come sleep under it! It would be very easy to make this quilt king sized by adding a 5”-10” border. Get my handy printable chart of standard quilt sizes.
Sew through your fabric stash with all my free quilt patterns.
This version uses 6 print fabrics plus a background fabric. I encourage you to get scrappy and use as many different fabrics as you like! There are only three blocks: a plain square, a quarter square triangle you can sew with a shortcut method, and a simple diamond in a square.
Before making my final fabric selection, I considered using all orange fabrics. I bet it would be gorgeous in all blue fabrics too.
I can’t wait to see all of the New Traditions quilts that my readers make!

Make 24 Quarter Square Triangle Blocks
Use a 1/4” (or scant 1/4”) seam allowance throughout this quilt pattern. You will make 12 quarter square triangle (QST) blocks using pink #1 and orange fabrics and 12 QST blocks using pink #2 and yellow fabrics.
1. Use the pencil or fabric marking pen to draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of all of the 13 1/2” background fabric squares. This is a cutting line.
Place a 13 1/2” background fabric square right sides together a 13 1/2” pink #1 fabric square. Pin the squares together.
2. Sew 1/4’’ away from the cutting line on on both sides of the line.
3. Cut each piece in half diagonally along the line. Open and press to make 2 half square triangles. Repeat to make 6 pink #1/background fabric pieces.
4. Place a 13 1/2” background fabric square right sides together with a 13 1/2” orange fabric square. Pin the squares together.
5. Sew 1/4’’ away from the cutting line on on both sides of the line.
6. Cut each piece in half diagonally along the line. Open and press to make 2 half square triangles. Repeat to make 6 orange/background fabric squares.
7. Use the pencil or fabric marking pen to draw a diagonal line across the wrong side of all of the orange and background fabric half square triangles. The diagonal line should go across background fabric and print fabric. This is a cutting line.
8. Place the orange half square triangles right sides together with the pink #1 half square triangles. The print fabrics should not be facing each other. The print fabrics should be right sides together with the background fabric. Pin the pieces together.
9. Sew 1/4’’ away from the cutting line on on both sides of the line.
10. Cut each piece in half diagonally along the line. Open and press to make 2 quarter square triangles. Repeat to make 12 quarter square triangles.
Repeat steps 1-10 with the remaining 13 1/2” background fabric squares and the 13 1/2” pink #2 and yellow squares. You will make 12 quarter square triangles in this color combination.
Make 9 Diamond in a Square Quilt Blocks
1. Cut all of the 6 7/8” greenish and pink #3 squares in half diagonally. You should have 18 triangles in each fabric.
2. Use a fabric marker with disappearing ink or water removable ink to draw a vertical and horizontal line through the middle of the 9” background fabric squares. You could also fold each square in half and press the fold lightly with your iron.
3. Sew a greenish triangle to one side of the square, using the center line you marked to help you center the triangle on the square. Open the triangle and press it outwards.
4. Then sew another greenish triangle to the other side of the square. Open the triangle and press it outwards.
5. Sew the pink #3 triangles to the top and bottom edges of the square.
6. Press the block and trim away the dog ears and any extra fabric to make the block 12 1/2” square.
Repeat to make 9 diamond in a square quilt blocks from pink #3 and greenish fabrics.
