Have a Piece-fun Vacation Sewing Quilt Tops!
I can honestly say I’ve had a very ‘piece-ful’ vacation. Actually my most ‘pieceful’ vacation yet!
Our family likes to run away together for a week after Christmas. We’ve been to North Carolina and Tennessee in the past, but this year we picked a small cottage in the Florida Keys (just a few hours drive for us). For the first time, I brought a sewing machine.
And that’s how I spent all of my ‘free’ time.
My Reliable OVO travel iron got lots of use!
I did go kayaking and out on my husband’s boat. And we went shopping and ate fabulous food in Key West, but most vacations involve down time – because who wants to go, go, go ALL the time?
So I spent my down time sewing on the porch. When the wind got to be a bit too much I simply moved inside to the kitchen table.
When I posted this picture to Instagram, someone asked ‘why aren’t you down there enjoying the beach?’
I laughed out loud – but no one heard. I was enjoying beautiful weather, salty breezes, and a view of the ocean – while sewing! Let me tell you, this is the MOST enjoyment I have ever had at the beach.
And I pieced my Lloyd and Llola quilt from start to finish! I had already cut all the pieces before we left home, so everything was ready to sew.
{You can see my friend Alicia picking out the pattern and fabrics for this quilt in our Quilt Shop Challenge video.}
The other fabric that I brought with me on vacation was these – a strip bundle with prints from the Kaffe Fasset Collective, and a bundle of beautiful Kona snow strips (one of my favorites).
Since Valentine’s day is coming up, I decided to make a new Kisses Quilt, this time more scrappy plus white.
My Kisses Quilt uses low volume background fabrics and two main colors for the ‘X’s.
Get the free Kisses Quilt Pattern here.
Since the Kisses Quilt Pattern was edited by QT Fabrics to make it suited to the Sweet Caroline fabric collection, I’ll write an updated version soon to reflect my new ‘scrappy’ interpretation.
And now I’m so excited to be going home with two new quilt tops to finish into quilts. Which one is your favorite? Tell me in the comments. 🙂
I hope you’ve had a ‘piece-ful’ week too!

Sounds like the perfect vacation for me. I’m so glad you had the fun. Choosing a fav between these two quilts doesn’t work for me as they are both very appealing but for different reasons. I guess I like them both equally. Cheers
I love the Llama’s !
Love the llamas!!! Are you going to share with us how you made them?
The pattern is Lloyd and Llola by Elizabeth Hartman. There is a link to it in the post above.
I love this!!!! What a lovely idea. And I love both quilt tops!
Love them both, both the llamas are just so darned cute. I’m with you about a vacation that lets you have the best of both worlds, I love the beach but don’t sun bathe.
Fabulous quilts and I
love the Llamas! So
darling. Glad you had
a great vacation.

The Kisses quilt for sure – it’s one of those quilts that made me just go WOW. The llamas are cute do, but for me the Kisses just had that Wow factor. Am going to download it now (if I haven’t already) and add it to my To Do list to use up some of my leftover strips.
Love Love LOOOOOVE the Scrappy version of Kisses!!! Llamas are way cute too!
