Take Flight! 20+ Stunning & FREE Modern Flying Geese Quilt Patterns
The flying geese quilt block is a timeless design, and finding the perfect flying geese quilt pattern is often the first step toward a beautiful new project. I love the way these simple triangles create a sense of movement and flow that can completely change the look of a quilt top. Whether I am working on a traditional Americana style or a bold, modern design with colorful solids, the creative options are endless.
Because this block is so versatile, I want to make sure you have the best tools to sew it accurately. While some quilters find the triangles tricky at first, using a 4-at-a-time shortcut or the no-waste flying geese method makes the process much more approachable. This collection of free designs includes tutorials that help beginners gain confidence and give pros a faster way to finish their projects. I can’t wait to see which design you choose, so please tag @SewCanShe on Instagram!
3D (No-Waste) Flying Geese Method

You will only sew one seam to make this 3D Flying Geese Block. Use the free sewing tutorial from Patchwork Posse and add zero-waste and texture to your beautiful quilt. The seam hides behind the triangle leaving a little pocket on either side. Besides quilts, use this cute block to add interest to bolsters, borders, and baskets.
Classic 12″ Flying Geese Quilt Block

This free pattern for the classic flying geese quilt block uses a shortcut method you’ll love. I will show you how to make 4 units at one time using just 5 squares of fabric.
Pro-Tip: Why Use the 4-at-a-Time Method?
One of the best ways to speed up your sewing is by using a shortcut that produces four blocks at once. Instead of sewing and trimming individual triangles, this method uses larger squares of fabric to create multiple geese with very little effort. It is a fantastic way to ensure all your blocks stay the same size while significantly cutting down on your time at the sewing machine.
Sawtooth Star Quilt Block

Once you get the hang of it, you can combine these FG units in so many ways to make beautiful quilt blocks, and then fabulous quilts. Here is a classic block using flying geese (FG): the Sawtooth (or Variable) Star.
One Block Sawtooth Star Quilt

Sew a One-Block Sawtooth Star Quilt with just 3 yards of fabric! This free quilt pattern with a big medallion-style Sawtooth Star is perfect for the fall and winter seasons. Since I made mine for Christmas, I added a sweet holly applique in the corner. Let me show you how to make this beautiful showpiece quilt.
Dutchman’s Puzzle Quilt

Can you see where the flying geese are in this quilt design? You can sew this Dutchman’s Puzzle Quilt pattern with just 3 yards of fabric! This darling quilt uses the Dutchman puzzle quilt block to make a 47” x 59” throw quilt pattern with 12” quilt blocks.
Pro-Tip: Achieving Crisp Points
When sewing flying geese, the most common frustration is losing those sharp points in the seam allowance. To prevent this, I always aim my needle just a hair to the outside of the “X” where the previous seams intersect. This small adjustment ensures that when you press your block open, the point sits perfectly on the edge of the seam, giving your quilt a professional, high-quality finish.

Pro-Tip: The Geometry of a Perfect Goose
To get those perfect proportions, remember that a flying geese unit is always twice as wide as it is tall (unfinished). Using a dedicated flying geese ruler is an excellent shortcut options to maintain this ratio without the headache of manual calculations.
I prefer the 4 at a time shortcut method, but the math still happens first.
