Here is a hanging storage basket tutorial that is easy. Trust me. They’ll be great for organizing small items from your closet, drawer, and pantry, putting in familiar places like your laundry room for extra storage, or maybe your kitchen wall for keeping utensils. Of course, they work perfectly for storing craft supplies for your crafty projects!

This hanging storage basket tutorial is fat quarter friendly too! I used 2 fat quarters for each basket – one for the exterior and one for the lining. I grabbed an easy wooden curtain rod kit and painted it white and was good to go – easy! (source below)

Here are some of my favorite places to use hanging wall baskets on a rod like this:

• in the bedroom to hold kids toys and books
• in the bathroom to keep towels, hand towels, washcloths, and other essentials handy
• in the laundry room for stray socks, gloves, and other items
• in entryways to keep keys and clutter under control
• in my sewing room to organize thread, notions, cut fabric, scraps, fat quarters, and more!

I wanted my hanging storage baskets to have cute labels, so I top stitched pieces of inexpensive chalkboard fabric on the front.

Are you ready to make some hanging storage baskets???

Hanging Storage Baskets Sewing Tutorial:

To make 1 hanging storage basket, you will need:

• 2 fat quarters of fabric

• 1/3 yd of HeatnBond fusible fleece (20” wide)

• a scrap of chalkboard fabric (optional)

• SpraynBond basting adhesive or a glue stick (if you are sewing on a chalkboard label)

• a cutting mat, rotary cutter, ruler, sewing machine, and thread

Tip: 4 storage baskets fit great on a 48” rod, like this one I grabbed at Lowes and painted white.

Cut your fabric and fusible fleece:

From each fat quarter, cut:

• 1 rectangle 13” x 21”

• 2 tab strips 3” x 7”

From the chalkboard fabric, cut:

• 1 strip 3” x 7”

From the fusible fleece, cut:

• 1 rectangle 12” x 20”

How to prepare the fabric pieces:

1. Choose one of the large rectangles to be the hanging storage basket exterior. Center the fusible fleece on the back and press to fuse.

2. Fold the exterior rectangle in half with the shorter edges together. Mark and cut 1” tall x 1 1/2” wide rectangles from the corners at the fold. (see images above)

Repeat Step with the 13” x 21” lining piece.

How to Sew the Basket Hanging Tabs:

1. Place two 3” x 7” tab pieces right sides together (one exterior and one lining) and sew the long edges together with a 1/2” seam allowance. Repeat for the second hanging tab.

2. Turn each tab right side out and press flat. Topstitch along each long edge using the edge of your presser foot as a guide.

3. Open the exterior piece flat. Fold each hanging tab in half and pin the raw edges to the exterior piece as seen above.

Note that the hanging tabs are placed  on one of the shorter sides (which will become the top edge of the basket), 2” away from the corner.

4. Baste the hanging tabs in place 3/8” from the edge.

Attach the chalkboard label:

1. At the opposite end of the exterior piece, from the hanging tabs, adhere the piece of chalkboard fabric using spray basting adhesive or a simple glue stick.

The chalkboard label should be centered and 1” away from the edge.

2. Sew the chalkboard label in place 1/8” from the edge:

Tip: I used a ‘bean stitch’ to make it extra cute! This is that stitch that goes back and forth and sews three times for each stitch.

How to Sew the Hanging Storage Basket together:

1. Fold the exterior piece right sides together again (shorter edges matching). Pin and stitch the sides together with a 1/2” seam allowance.

Press the seams open.

2. Box the corners by flattening the side of the basket against the bottom. Sew the opening closed with a 1/2” seam allowance. Repeat on the other corner.

Repeat steps 1 and 2 above to sew the lining sides and box the corners.

3. With the basket exterior inside out and the lining right side out, pin the lining inside the basket exterior all around the top edge. The right sides of the fabrics should be facing each other.

Leave an opening between the two hanging tabs.

Tip: I like to use double pins to mark where I should start and stop sewing. Just a friendly reminder for myself so I don’t have to un-pick an opening. 🙂

4. Sew around the top edge with a 1/2” seam allowance. Remember to leave an opening between the hanging tabs.

I like to press the edges at the opening back before turning the basket right side out. It makes sewing the opening closed neater and easier.

5. Topstitch around the top edge of the hanging basket, using the edge of your presser foot as a guide. This will close the opening at the same time.
