Free motion quilt a sunburst in a square with this fun and easy quilting design that can be quilted with and without rulers. True, I really enjoy the really straight lines that ruler quilting can give me, but this design is just as easy to quilt without rulers too.
This is week 13 in our Color By Number Quiltalong where we are free motion quilting a new designs each week on our Color By Number Quilt (free quilt pattern)! Find all of the CBN Quiltalong videos here.
I think my favorite thing about this quilting design is the diagonal movement that it gives when we use it on our quilt that already has a diagonal design in it. It draws the eye upward in a way that you just can’t resist!

First I’ll show you how to free motion quilt the Sunburst design using a quilting ruler with a straight edge. I love using my SewSteady straight edge/12’’ arc ruler because it helps me keep my lines very straight and easily control the distance between the sunburst rays and also the seams in the quilt.
Next I’ll quilt the same design without a ruler. Knowing that the edge of my sewing machine foot is 1/4’’ away from the needle, I’ll use that to help me keep my sunburst rays the right distance from eachother and the edges of the block.
I think you’ll agree that this design is just as pretty quilted with a ruler and without!
At the end of the video I share a sneak peek of my newest quilt that I just finished. It will be a free pattern here on the SewCanShe blog soon… sign up for my newsletter so you don’t miss it!
