Getting Started
You can sew DIY Christmas stockings from just about any fabric including quilting cotton, fleece, flannel, burlap, and home decor fabrics. Faux fur or makes a fun trim for the cuff piece but you can use any other fabric too!
Good tools to have when sewing Christmas stockings:
- sewing machine
- scissors
- rotary cutter and ruler
- fabric and coordinating thread
- hand sewing needle and thread (sometimes needed for adding trim)

Basic Quilted Stocking Pattern
First, try my free sewing pattern for Basic Quilted Christmas Stockings – they are so easy to sew with your favorite fabric! Quilting adds sweet old fashioned texture. Sew them up quick and hang by the fireplace tonight.
Quick Mini Stocking Pattern
Need a fast and easy little stocking? Here’s my adorable mini stocking pattern with applique heels and toes! This Christmas stocking tutorial is perfect for scraps and fat quarters. The applique stitches on the toe are cute and fast if you use your sewing machine, but you can skip it if you are short on time. I used ric rac for the hanger so these can go on the mantle or simply be given away.
Zipper Pouch Stockings
Let me show you how to make holiday zipper pouch stockings in the shape of an elf bootie. Add a swivel snap hook to the hanging loop so it can be attached anywhere. I just love the curved toe! You can use the pattern piece to make cute quilt-as-you-go stockings, or stockings with a single cotton fabric instead (like the back side of the stocking). My cuff fabric is fleece. Don’t forget to use a cute lining fabric for the inside too!
