15 Free & Easy Quilt Patterns for Beginners (Yes, Even You!)

I decided to put together a list of free, easy quilt patterns after beginning sewists shared that they would love to try their hand at quilting, but didn’t feel confident in their sewing skills yet. Although it is a common misconception that you need years of experience to create a beautiful, high-quality quilt, that is far from truth. In fact, easy techniques and simple shapes can create some of the most stunning quilts you can imagine!

If you are looking for free quilt patterns that are actually good, these designs focus on clean lines and modern layouts that look impressive without the stress of advanced piecing. Each project is free to print, or available for purchase as an instant download. These beginner-friendly designs are a perfect way to build your confidence and your quilt stash at the same time. Many of them even use precut squares so you don’t even have to fuss with cutting your fabric!

This free easy quilt pattern contains 24 ‘cherry’ quilt blocks that are sewn together in log cabin style. Hence, I call it my ‘Cherry Log Cabin’ quilt block. Each block is 9” x 9” after sewing. The finished size of this free, easy quilt pattern throw is approximately 46” x 64”.

This quilt was inspired by the piece that is probably Mary’s most iconic, Chair of Bowlies. The sentiment is precious to me… that life can delight us in unexpected ways if we embrace imperfection and learn to laugh.
