Ya’ll know how much I love the holidays… and I practically sew for Christmas all year long, lol! This week I made a Raccoon Softie from the PDF Pattern by Mariska of DIYFluffies and it turned out too cute for words!
A couple months ago I ran out of patience with my old Elna serger… even though the sewing function still worked okay, she was a beast to thread and the presser foot lifter had broken off, which made inserting fabric tricky. Plus she lacked the feature that i dreamed about most… jet air loopers.
I’m busy unpacking and getting ready to show you more about how we built my 36′ desk (post coming Monday), but in the meantime I wanted to show you this awesome new iron that the folks at Reliable sent me… the Maven 100IS.
The floor in my new sewing studio is still not done. As I tried to be patient this week and sew in my little back-bedroom makeshift studio, I consoled myself by doing what anyone would do… I bought a new serger! I picked the Juki MO-1000 from AllBrands.com.
I’ve said it before, but I really believe that Christmas in July was invented by sewists & quiltmakers because now is when we start our holiday projects! Otherwise they would never be done in time, lol.
I love sewing my kids’ swimsuits and I don’t know what it is about it that makes it so fun and gratifying to me. Maybe because my kids love to swim so my handmade swimsuits get used a lot. Or maybe because they are so cost effective – you can often get 2 or more kids swimsuits from a yard of fabric!
I spent a whole afternoon this week hammering and sanding… sounds like I was building something, right? I really felt cool working with different tools than usual… and I was sewing jeans!
I finally got around to some selfish sewing this week! And FYI, to me that’s not a negative term! It means I took a little time to sew myself a treat – and tomorrow I’ll be back to sewing for the people I love.
I’m already of fan of all the It’s Sew Emma books (they are delightful to read and easy to use), so ‘Fat Quarter Baby’ fits right into my collection.
The book contains 20 baby quilts – 10 named after girls and 10 named after boys.

I LOVE Little House on the Prairie. I grew up reading (and re-reading) the books and wishing that I was Laura Ingalls. I experienced snow drifts taller than Pa, maple sugar candy, and snuggling under quilts sewn by Ma in the pages of the Little House books. Later I read some of the books to my children and marveled how 2 boys and 2 girls ages 2 through 8 could all lay still listening and then beg for another chapter, and another.
